My definition of purge – sell, donate, repurpose or throw away items as you see fit

Winter Linens
I live on the Gold Coast in Queensland, so the temperature here is still quite warm, however I have been reading that some of the lovely people who live in the southern parts of Australia are feeling the chill in the evenings, winter is approaching.
I keep all our winter linens in the top of the laundry linen cupboard. Usually when I put the linens away after the cold season has finished I go through them and purge any that need replacing or no longer functioning as needed. My kids love flannelette sheets and I find after a few years they are really worn and need replacing.
I store all our seasonal sheets in the large Ikea Kassett boxes. When these are ready to be replaced or I can find another purpose for them, I would prefer to use plastic storage boxes for my linens.
Todays task is to:
Go through all your winter linens, purge any excess items you don’t need, or items that are very worn and need replacing. Create a shopping list of the items you need to replace so you have them ready for winter.
For each bed in our home I have the following:
- 2 x regular sheet sets
- 2 x flannelette sheet sets
- 1 x blanket
- 2 x quilts/doonas
- 1 x pillow
- 1 x mattress protector
- 1 x pillow protector
How many items have you been able to purge today?
I would like to see a photo of your purge pile on Instagram, use the hashtag #declutter52

I have finally been able to access the ‘spare’ sheets (we have a spare bed at the moment, and also go away a lot, so have a couple of sets of QS and single bed sheets for those BYO linen places) and realised just how trashed that cupboard is. I’m at the putting everything back stage of a kitchen reno, so thinking that it might be nice to have a quick win and reorganise the linen cupboard!
(At the moment, I’m three steps forward, one sideways and/or one back with sorting and culling so stuff can go back in the kitchen and laundry.)
It always gets worse before it gets better, lol!
Oh, I did the sheets last weekend. Didn’t actually get rid of any, even though we have more than we need – but at the moment we also dont have a spare bedroom, which we may remedy soon, which will then need a bed and suitable linen.
It also means we have spares for if we’ve just changed the sheets and then end up sick or similar and need to change sheets again without worrying about the ones already in the wash.
Fair enough! 🙂
I noticed that your top shelf in your linen cupboard is the same as mine in that you only have a small access area to it. How do you fit the boxes in?
I’ve started using one of the pillows from my sheet sets as a ‘bag’ for the rest of that set. Everything fits into the bottom half of the case and if I fold the top half over it makes a neat little rectangle that’s easy to stack and retrieve when I need it. It’s especially useful when my attempts to fold the fitted sheet aren’t entirely successful!
That’s a great idea!
Kat, what if you don’t have much storage room in house, and to put storage (shelves, cupboards, some type of storage solution) costs money…how do you declutter/organise and priortise what to keep/get rid of etc? I feel overwhelmed. New house, no storage, no money due to big new house to get storage, even a $29 basket from kmart – and in any case Id need 3-4 … and 2 boys and anew born. Theres always washing everwhere, they NEEd warm jackets, boots, doonas etc but I can never find enough space to put it all away and keep it clean and tidy!
In my linen cupboard i put tubes of concentrated fabric softener ( i use fluffy) in between my piles of sheets & towel & blankets to keep them smelling clean and fresh…
I love the smell of fluffy, great idea to make them smell nice.
