Book Review: Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann

This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I nearly put it down due to the intensity of certain scenes, but Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann kept me invested with its powerful writing and deeply layered characters. This story isn’t just about trauma, it’s about resilience, healing, and finding love in the most unexpected places.

"Love doesn’t exist without sacrifice. Sometimes those sacrifices are waking up ten minutes early to make your partner coffee. Sometimes it’s taking on a second job to support your family. Sometimes it’s staying up all night with a newborn so your significant other can finally sleep. Sometimes it’s shoveling the other person’s car out of the driveway after a snowstorm. And sometimes it’s making the ultimate sacrifice and walking away for the greater good."

Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann

Cora and Dean have never gotten along. Their banter and pranks have defined their relationship for years. But when a chance encounter leads to them being kidnapped together, their lives change forever. Forced to endure unimaginable trauma, they become each other’s anchor, finding strength in one another to survive. But survival is only the beginning, the real challenge is navigating life after.

My Favourite Quotes from Still Beating

  • Every love story is worth writing, no matter how messy it might be.
  • You can’t tiptoe around your heart in fear of pissing people off or hurting their feelings. Sometimes we need to be a little selfish in order to avoid a life of complacency.
  • Just get better. There’s no shame in the struggle, but you can’t stay there forever. We’re all here for you.
  • We can’t give our heart to another without loving our own first.
  • Insertion is inevitable.

Still Beating Character Fan Art

When I read, I love imagining what the characters might look like in real life. Fan art brings them to life outside the pages, adding extra depth to the story. I’ve shared some beautiful fan art below to help you picture them too.
