Book Review: The Women by Kristin Hannah

The Women by Kristin Hannah is my favourite book of hers. It opened my eyes to what so many women went through during the Vietnam War, something I really hadn’t read about before. The way they were treated, both during and after, left me shocked and heartbroken. I have so much respect for these women and everything they endured.

"The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn’t quite yet ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words: We were there."

The Women by Kristin Hannah

The story follows Frances ‘Frankie’ McGrath, a young woman from a privileged background who enlists as a nurse in the Vietnam War. Through her journey, we see the harsh realities of war and the struggles of coming home to a society that doesn’t acknowledge what she and other women went through. It’s a powerful and eye-opening read that stays with you long after the final page.

🎧 Audiobook Experience

Narrated by Julia Whelan

Listening to this on audio was something else, and Julia Whelan completely elevated the whole experience. She captured the emotion and weight of the story so beautifully, especially in the quieter, reflective moments. You could feel the vulnerability, the strength, the heartbreak, all of it. Her pacing was spot on and she gave each character their own presence without it ever feeling overdone. It honestly felt like sitting down with someone who deeply understood the story and was letting you feel it properly.

My Favourite Quotes from The Women

  • Women can be heroes, too.
  • Thank God for girlfriends. In this crazy, chaotic, divided world that was run by men, you could count on the women.
  • We were the last believers, my generation. We trusted what our parents taught us about right and wrong, good and evil, the American myth of equality and justice and honor.
  • Words were creators of worlds; you had to be careful with them.
  • We laugh so we don’t cry.

Spice Rating

In books I have given 1 spice rating you will find them plot-focused with no romance scenes, perfect for readers who prioritise character development and storytelling without romantic elements.
