Apple and Cinnamon Pastry Twists – Kids in the Kitchen

This is a guest post by Vicki from Boiled Eggs and Soldiers

As it’s the school holidays I’ve been thinking about activities to do with the kids.  I’m not so much of a crafty Mum, unless it’s something they can do on their own (that doesn’t involve glitter, or paint…) but I’m 100% a cooking Mum (and also a go play outside Mum)! I’m always looking for ideas that gets kids interested in being in the kitchen.

Kids in the Kitchen

If your kids are anything like mine pastry is something that always gets them interested, well anything wrapped in pastry anyway!  Pastry twirls are something that’s fun for all ages to enjoy making as it really doesn’t matter what they look like at the end, they will still taste great plus you have snacks for the day sorted too. We often make these when the girls have friends over for play dates as they are so easy to make especially if you store bought puff pastry!

What you need

  • 1 packet of puff pastry
  • fillings of your choice (we used apple puree (baby food) & cinnamon and  my blueberry chia jam but use whatever jam is your favourite)
  • 1 egg for glazing

What you do

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Let the pastry defrost and then cut into about 8cm strips

spread out the filling of your choice on the pastry strip

this one is apple & cinnamon but then …

she put the lot on this one, as you do.

You then pinch each end together and start twisting from the outside in to form a “twirl” or “twist” whichever word you like better!

You can then make into any shape you like.  We made some into wreaths, some into wands, some into twirls and some

Put them onto the prepared baking tray and then whisk up the egg in a small bowl.  With a pastry brush glaze with the egg wash.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes or until golden and bubbly and there you have some edible festive fun!

These are best eaten warm from the oven or at least on the day of making.  You can also make savoury varieties parmesan or pesto would be nice I think.
