Moving home tips

by Katrina - The Organised Housewife May 1, 2013April 27, 2013
May 1, 2013April 27, 2013

Since the life of this blog I have had many many requests asking for moving tips. There is so much more to moving than I can share in one post, so I am sharing the following tips with you over the next month:

  • sorting through your clutter
  • purging the clutter
  • garage sale tips
  • moving tips
  • checklists (because I love checklists) to help you through it all
  • and more

I recently helped my dad move into his new home.  Which began with a big declutter, followed by a few garage sales and then the move.  I’ve also moved houses a few times so I’ll share all my tips.  But first the most important I feel is not taking unwanted clutter to your new home.  Tomorrow I’ll share my ideas on how to sort through your clutter and not take that item that you ‘might use one day’ or the ‘I know I never use it, but it cost me a lot of money’, or ‘it was a gift, I can’t get rid of it’.

What is your top moving tip?

Start packing as early as possible and box up nearly everything. It is so frustrating to help someone move who doesn’t have everything ready. I hate carrying individual items out to the car or having to pack at the last minute. Obviously some stuff has to be last minute, but get it done ahead of time. And BUY boxes. We had a few moves where we tried to get boxes from grocery or department stores but that’s a pain. During my last two moves, I went to Home Depot and bought boxes. It made it SO much easier.

Make sure you know exactly where the sheets are and make the beds as soon as they are in the new house. Then when you’re exhausted that night and can’t unpack any more, you can just fall straight into bed without having to make it first!

Labelling boxes by writing on them can be a pain- you feel like you have to label each side so you can tell what’s in them from any angle. Instead, buy some coloured dot stickers from Officeworks and make a colour-coded labelling system- for example, kitchen things are a blue dot, orange is linen cupboard, purple for master bedroom, etc. That way, even from a distance, you will be able to tell where a box needs to go when unpacking the truck and/or instructing removalists where to place them.

Pack an overnight bag for each member of the family as if you were going away for the weekend. Include a change of clothes and basic toiletries so that you have what you need for the first day without having to rummage around in boxes looking for shampoo.

Thank you for the awesome tips! Aside from getting your valuables organised, I believe that you should work as hard finding the perfect removalists penrith expert. If you choose the wrong provider, well all your effort to preparing your items will be put to waste due to inability of your removal company to get the job done.

This is a great article and has come in very handy. I am using Perth Removalists and they have provided some packaging to dispose of some of the clutter mentioned above!

I’m going to be moving this next weekend. We’re only moving a few blocks away, but I’m worried about damaging our furniture. We don’t want to replace any furniture if we can avoid it. I want to find someone who specializes in moving furniture. http://westlakeremovals.com.au/services

Thanks for all your good idea – they’re great. I wanted to add that I ordered a skip bin for a week after I had my garage sale, so I had to throw more away and therefore didn’t have to pack everything that didn’t sell.

That’s a fantastic idea Linda, would of saved you so much effort when moving too!

Some great tips here. I’d also suggest to consider hiring a profressional removalist. I know the costs may sound high at first but the time and hassle you save could be well worth it. We’ve also put together some more moving tips over at http://www.a2bremovalsgroup.com.au, including a free moving checklist.

Also make sure to check out online reviews from different moving companies.

Great post, thanks!

Moving is the most stressful event in a person’s life; when a person sells house out of financial crisis or any other problem; managing the hassles of moving becomes really tough to handle.

My top moving tip would have to be getting an early start. Start de-cluttering early, start organizing all your belongings early, start the removal of your junk early, start any garage sale early, and basically start everything necessary way earlier than the actual move. You will find that you have so much ample time to settle down and carry out every process slowly and steadily. This way, you will not miss out on anything which could cause you trouble later on.

Some great tips here. I like to put a clearly marked box aside for each bedroom with all the bed linen required to make up the bed, including clean sheets. It is always so good to get into your own bed after a busy day moving in.

I’m going to be moving soon, and I want to make sure I hire the best movers to help me. The problem is is that I’m having a really hard time finding some. This being said, I really appreciate you giving me some insight about how I can hire the right movers. I definitely think that if I were to have some help like this, that it’ll make moving a lot less stressful.

In all honesty though, I have a lot of boxes I like ticked when picking the perfect vacuum cleaner. Visit the link in my bio to see if Miele’s first handstick vacuum managed to tick all these boxes for me!

White Chocolate and Cranberry Cookies 🍪⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This recipe was contributed by Tracey (a lovely member of our community!). She suggests using an ice cream scoop to shape the cookies, which should give them a lovely rippled texture on top. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The base recipe without the white chocolate and cranberries can be used for any alternative ingredients like dark choc bits and macadamias. The full recipe is on my blog! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

PS - I would suggest adjusting the sugar quantities to your own tastes if you prefer cookies to be less sweet! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
