Leave your review – Moccona has changed, we aren’t going crazy!

So I know there are bigger issues out there in the world, but I take my coffee very seriously and from the response I had on social media this week, I felt the need to share this on the blog, gather your comments publically and contact Moccona to share the results to hopefully get them to do like BBQ shapes did and revert back to what was working.

Last week I opened up a new bottle of my most favourite coffee, Moccona Classic Medium Roast. We have a fancy nespresso machine (hubby’s go-to), but I just like my simple Moccona, 3 times a day, from the kettle, with one spoonful of sugar and a dash of milk, it makes my heart sing. Anyways, I made myself a coffee from a new bottle last week and it was bad. I made myself another that afternoon thinking that I mustn’t have been concentrating and made myself a bad coffee, but it was just as bad.  I put it down to the sugar, maybe one of the kids did something to the sugar.  Nope.  OK, must have been a bad bottle of coffee, I was going to take it back.  My darling hubby stopped into the grocery store and picked me up a new jar (he looks after me). Although not impressed that I wasted $$ on full jar of unused coffee, I made my coffee with the new jar and as I was stirring it realised it smelt different, before even tasting it I knew it was going to taste disgusting.  I had both jars side by side, it’s then I saw on the label ‘now richer aroma’.  That’s for sure, aroma has changed, but so has the taste.  Moccona, what have you done???!!!

I shared a story on Instagram sharing what I had just learnt and wondered if others liked the new taste.  I had soooo many replies of poor ladies in the community thinking they were going crazy, that there was something wrong with their milk or ability to make coffee too.  Same as me!!!  I did a poll on Instagram stories, which ran for 24 hours, out of 931 votes, 751 voted they weren’t a fan of the new taste and 180 say they love it.

As I said I know there are bigger issues in the world, #firstworldproblems, but I’m picky about my coffee – I only really liked Moccona. I don’t want to diss other brands, but I just liked Moccona’s flavour.  This makes me super sad and slightly moody LOL. I had quite a few members in our Instagram community ask me to contact Moccona and share the results of my Instagram poll, however, it’s not a true reflection of my community just a small portion.  So let’s gather your responses below.

Moccona has been getting a roasting, LOL, love that line, on news sites:

Please share in the comments below if you would like to see Moccona back to its ORIGINAL Medium Roast

Simply post LOVE IT or HATE IT followed by any other feedback

Moconna, I would sit and tell anybody that listened how much I love my morning ritual with my Moccona coffee, it warmed my heart, didn’t taste bitter or burnt, it was a great start to the day.  Sadly, I can’t bring myself to drink the new version and am now looking for new alternatives.  I truly hope that you will consider bringing back your original medium roast blend – Kat, The Organised Housewife.

HATE IT – Great idea Kat, I’ve followed you for years and know your coffee is a bit of your morning ritual. Moccona, I’ve been drinking your coffee for as long as I can remember, I was one of these people too that didn’t realise it had changed and took my bottle back for a refund, then to learn you changed the flavour. Not happy jan, bring back the original please.

They have changed it from a brilliant taste terrible one. So dissatisfied and disappointing. I now have to use and extra 1/2 tsp to get it strong enough and sugar to mask the terrible after taste. It took me buying a few different sized ones to realise it was the coffee that changed.

HATE IT! For weeks I was convinced I either couldn’t make a good coffee anymore, or something has gone terribly wrong with my tastes buds. One sip of that burnt, acidic foulness and I’d tip the cup out. I’ve started buying Nescafe Gold instead.

I’m gutted moccona have deleted my all time favourite Awaken number 3. They have told me the French is the equivalent but believe it’s not. I’m on the hunt for a new coffee. Any suggestions?

Reply

I hear you Carmel!! Awaken was a great replacement after the changing of the Classic recipe. I purchased French Style since it’s also a 3, but it is nowhere near the same as Awaken. Very disappointing!!

Hate it. If I want bad coffee I’ll drink Nescafe. I buy Moccona because it’s better. No more. Thinking it’s time to go back to plunger coffee using actual ground beans. At least that is consistent!

I kept thinking there must be a problem with the water from the kettle. The taste has changed for the worse- leaves a burnt/metallic after taste. I will be trying other brands now.

We noticed this back in April, we too thought we were going crazy, and so I switched to the aldi one (it’s actually the same as moccona and then the exact same thing happened) It made me extremely cranky. We have now bought a delonghi coffee machine and I dilute my coffee so it tastes like the original moccona. But I miss my delicious moccona!

Reply
Louise August 9, 2018 - 10:40 AM

HATE HATE HATE the new “improved” blend, whoever you did the extensive consumer testing on lied straight to you face. I used to carry a little container of Moccona coffee in my handbag because of the fact that my work branches use that horrible Nescafe, but if your coffee is now equally as shit then I might as well drink that instead of paying for crap coffee. Bottom line your new coffee is shameful and until you change it back to what wasn’t broken in the first place, I won’t be buying it anymore.

Reply
Fran August 9, 2018 - 10:45 AM

I didn’t want a “new richer aroma” I was quite happy with the way it was. What got into you Moccona, you’ve lost me.

Reply

As soon as I realised they had changed, I literally bought all the jars at my local supermarket that were the ‘old’ jars. I have 3 jars now until we run out, and then I’ll be looking for another brand. I won’t be buying Moccona unless they change it back.
The new ‘richer aroma’ tastes bitter and burnt. You can smell it before you taste it, it is honestly disgusting and I don’t know how anyone could drink it! You’ve lost me as a customer Moccona!

Reply
Olivia August 9, 2018 - 12:45 PM

Not happy Jan!
With over 15 instant coffees in their range why did Moccona mess with their classic medium roast instead of putting out another line and calling it something different?
I am a loyal brand name shopper and have had Moccona for far more years than I can remember. In the wake of this and having been stung by buying the “new rich aroma” version which I dislike I have now left the Moccona brand and chosen to buy a competitor brand. If the taste of a product changes, I will cease to buy it. Stop your meddling! When Arnotts changed their bbq shapes recipe, I left them too….even when they returned the original flavour to the shelf, it was too late…they lost me. See ya Moccona!

I have been through a range of emotions and thoughts around the new blend.
I was on holidays when I purchased a new botttle of moconna. It tasted foul, revolting. I thought it was the milk, the holiday house water, the holiday house kettle… beck I even considered whether I was pregnant.. I could not work out why my more staple of 15 years suddenly tasted awful. Got home, used some moconna from home (old Blend) – it was amazing! I found out from reviews on productreview.com.au and moconnas Facebook page to work out they had changed their Blend.
I don’t understand. Why fix something that isn’t broken. I’m looking for an alternative but I cannot stomach this new blend.

HATE IT!!! Once I realised what they had done, I was buying up all the larger size jars at Woolies that were still the old taste/flavour. Do not like the new flavour at all. I like many i know stocked up on the old once i knew they had changed the flavour. I have been a moccona lover for years but will be looking for a new coffee when my stash runs out. Bring the original flavour back.

Michael August 9, 2018 - 4:02 PM

I don’t understand why they would wish to drop an overwhelmingly large market share.
I switched to Moccona in the late 1980s after trying it at a friends place. My close and extended family changed over shortly after trying it. As I recall, the taste was the central theme to their advertising campaigns. A well founded one at that! If I wanted a bitter, burnt and muddy tasting coffee I wouldn’t have changed to Moccona 30 something years ago. If you were putting out one of the best instant products on the market I would have thought more caution would have been exercised if the absolute need to adjust was required. Did anyone taste it before making the change? I hope you didn’t throw away the old recipe guys! Please make it known if you change it back. I will be finding something else in the mean time.

Did they not learn anything from Shapes BBQ biscuits?? Perhaps they should have left number 5 as number 5 and made a number 5.5 which was “richer”. By the way rich doesn’t mean bitter.. which is what the new flavour is. I guess I’ll get Nescafé Gold now. Bye bye Maccona ??

I also discovered last week that Moccona had changed their Classic Roast. It tastes burnt and bitter, really gross!! I have 2 of the largest jars, and neither me nor my husband can drink it, so we will be returning the unopened jar. I wrote to Moccona via their facebook messenger to give them my review and they gave a standard reply and suggested to try the French Style as it has a milder flavour. I too really enjoyed my instant coffee, especially on these cold days in Melbourne. We have a Nespresso machine which we are using in the interim until we figure out what new instant coffee we’ll be buying….

I thought it must have been the milk or something but my coffee tasted burnt and bitter and the smell just wasn’t the same. I seriously thought I was going mad, or that my tastes had changed for some reason (too many bought coffees perhaps)… I agree with many others – Moccona classic roast used to be my coffee of choice,, now I cannot drink it as it tastes bitter and burnt. Unfortunately, I wasted money on a medium sized bottle, which I have now thrown out. Needless to say, I am now looking for a new favourite coffee.

Dear Moccona,
Thank you for ruining my coffee, I have about
5 cups every morning now I can’t even have 1
I wrote to Moccona and asked them if they had changed their blend and soon received a reply :
——————————

Thank you for contacting Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the home of Moccona, regarding your experience with Moccona Classic Medium Roast Freeze Dried Coffee.

We take all feedback and enquiries to heart and are saddened that you have not enjoyed one of our products.
Our Moccona Brew Masters have recently improved the blend and processes to offer a richer aroma whilst still delivering a high-quality product. We undertook extensive consumer testing which had positive results and a liking for this richer aroma, which delivers a rounded, balanced medium roast flavour.

We believe that this is the difference that you have noted as we have upgraded our coffee brewing processes which has meant we can capture more flavour and aroma from each coffee bean.
We would like to suggest trying our Moccona “French Style No. 3” blend which is a light-medium roast.

Your comments have been heard and will be passed on to our Brand team.

We hope you enjoy your next Moccona moment.
Yours faithfully,

—————-

Regards Liz

Just returned 2 400g jars to Costco as it was disgusting. Had a foul taste in my mouth. Tasted burnt, smell was no better. Commented on the fb page. So many complaints. One suggesting it was like cigarette butts..thinking about it, yes! Gone back to our more expensive one we used to buy. Won’t be touching it while it tastes like that. Moccona say get French Style..really..no.3. We tried Awakening which is a 3, no taste more like it! Bad move Moccona.

I can’t even spell the sound effects Moccona’s new taste makes me produce. I too got the stock standard response from Moccona when I gave them my thoughts about their “richer aroma”. I used to love their number 5 so much that I have a stash of the decaf too. That’s what’s getting me through at the moment, I have a teaspoon of the decaf and throw half a teaspoon of the “richer aroma” in on top of it purely for the caffeine value. Thankfully they either haven’t changed the decaf yet or they’re not going to (or my stash was just bought before they did) so I can still luxuriate in my favourite flavour. Just don’t tell too many people – I’d hate for them to get wind of it and suddenly change the decaf too!

It is not just the Classic that has changed, we have drunk the Moccona Rich no 9 for years, and all of a sudden wasn’t enjoying my coffee anymore, wondered what was going on so googled it and found this. What a monumental stuff up Moccona – your coffee which we once enjoyed now tastes absolutely awful, how disappointing, and then to hear the companies spin on it all, telling us they have improved the taste when so many people are complaining! Have they even tried their own coffee?

Terrible. What an incredibly dumb move, changing a successful product for something that tastes so bad. They need to ask for their money back from the market researchers that they supposedly hired. I will no longer buy Moccona until they change it back.

HATE IT! Won’t be buying another jar of Moccona until it is changed back. Why mess with a perfect product? Got one jar of the old recipe left – hopefully Moccona changes back to the original recipe before it’s gone…. PLEASE Moccona change it back!!!

I’ve made a complaint to Moccona about this, the reply I got was “Our Coffee Specialists upgraded our brewing processes which means we can capture more flavour and aroma from each coffee bean. What this means is our Moccona Classic No 5 taste has moved from a light-medium roast to a true medium, this is what you are noticing.” I replied again that the only taste I was getting was re-used coffee beans with bitter sour notes, and the exercise was a cost cutting process because you wouldn’t change a leading seller for any other reason.

Absolutely hate the new Moccona. It tastes foul, bitter and stale, and I don’t think it is connected to the strength. Like others, I thought it was my imagination, with sugar, water or milk making the difference. Looking for another brand now. No more Moccona for me ??

We have 3 coffee drinkers in our family vote taken – no more Moconna until they return to the old blend. None of us can drink it its foul. MY QUESTION IS SURELY THEY WILL PUT IT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL FORM……….I HAVE NOT HEARD ONE GOOD WORD ABOUT THE NEW BLEND. A REPLY FROM MOCCONA WOULD BE NICE……..ARE YOU PLANNING ON GOING BACK TO WHAT WAS A PROVEN WINNER………….even my customers dont like the “new improved blend”

Really awful. So disappointing, I only have one or two cups of coffe per day, BUT I’m pretty fussy about what I have. We’ve been using the Moccona No.5 for years, the product has always been consistently great. Now its revolting. It tastes bitter & burnt. I won’t be buying Moccona coffee again. I’ll buy coffee beans, a grinder & drip or coffee machine .

The new Medium Roast tastes awful, it has a bitter, burnt flavour. I searched the web looking for a recall notice, I thought Moccona might have filled the jar with the wrong coffee. I can’t believe it is deliberate. Moconna – change the medium roast (number 5) back to the old formula, if you thing the new formula is so great give it it’s own number – 11 is probably appropriate, you can call it “Burnt Roast”.

So Im not the only one! Phew! I have been struggling with Mocconas ever changing inconsistancies for some time now. Ive been buying Moccona Indulgence for moons n have particularly noticed change in aroma and taste, blaming everything from my ageing/diminishing tastebuds and sugar variations, to which supermarket chain I buy it from (silly, I know!) Tonight…I cracked open a brand new jar…I always stop n smell the coffee prior to making it…(true story)…it smelt far from full-bodied and velvety…it smelt burnt n rather odd. I made my coffee the usual way with the usual milk n sugar…that smell should have prompted me to tip it out…but I sipped all the same…took a second sip just to be sure (no, Im not Irish) and tipped it out. Most unhappy that a coffee Ive been buying for years has declined immensley in quality. Ive been keeping jars these past 12mths or so…(mum has just cleared them out for use elsewhere) The few I did keep have different labelling…the label no longer states 100% arabica beans…it now states a choice blend of 100% coffee beans. The previous jars state made in Netherlands from imported coffee beans. The new jar states the coffee is PACKED in the Netherlands from imported coffee. So where is it actually made? Anywho…taking the jar back tomorrow for my $16 refund. Thanks for the memories moccona!

Hi Kat, just wondering if you knew anyting about Moccona reverting to the original classic taste… just putting my online order in and none of the jars in the pics have the little badge that said “new richer aroma”. Maybe moccona listened to the thousands of disgruntled drinkers!!

The coffee is disgusting – you change the classis and then I find out that you have now changed the FRENCH style which is also disgusting, I knew something was different as soon as I opened up my new jar which I will be taking back for a refund. Listen to your loyal customers and bring back the original coffee. I will not be buying your coffee anymore until you bring the old recipe back and I am sure that you have lost many customers and possibly profits due to this. NOT HAPPY.

Exactly the same thing has clearly happened in the UK with the Indulgence version, so probably the standard as well. Just started to taste burned, the way coffee used to when you put the water in first. Now the only way to make it slightly tolerable IS to put the water first, still tastes awful.

I’ve actually stopped buying it and now buy the cheaper much nicer ALDI brand coffee – not as nice as Douwe Egberts (Moccona) should be – but much better than it is, sadly.

Vile, Disgusting and just plain SAD. Why,Why Why? would you do this you have ruined it. I cringe everytime I see the moccona commercial two lovey dovey models sipping their moccona romantically. You’ve changed your coffee so change your commercial. The models now should have excruciating painful looks on their faces as this hideous vile tasting stuff would ruin any romance. Please give us back our beautiful tasting moccona. This new so called improved version is cheap and nasty and you have done this for the dollars. CRUEL.

I totally agree – just purchased a new jar of Moconna Rich and it’s disgusting. I’ve been drinking that flavour for years and it’s so disappointing that they changed it. After reading these comments I phone Moconna on 1800 033 450 to find out if they changed it and they said yes. They also said they have had various complaints and are taking details down and if they have enough complaints they will change it back, so I suggest anyone who is not happy about it give them a call and politely let them know you don’t like it so they will take a serious look at it and may change it back.
Also, just as a footnote – many years ago I used to love drinking Nescafe Blend 43 and they too changed their flavour overnight and it was the same burnt disgusting flavour. That was when I switched to Moconna Rich, so hopefully Moconna listen and don’t make the same mistake.

I always buy the 400g jar of Moccona 5 and have been annoyed lately that when I make the coffee, lumps float around on top. Yuk!!
I bought another 400g jar yesterday thinking the previous jar was faulty, but after reading all the comments I realise you have changed the formula and I HATE IT.

I thought that I was going crazy that the coffee from the jar of Classic 5 tasted crap. How can they stuff it up. Any ideas out there of a good coffee to replace it with. It was my late brother in laws wish that his ashes were placed in inscribed large size Moconna jars, which was done. He of course loved the brand so much. He would be one pissed off guy if he new that the taste he loved so much has now been turned into complete crap.

I have some real answers for you and you are not going to like them. Macona has stopped making good coffee because they can’t afford it. Apparently good coffee costs more than $16 for 400g to make and with global warming and a greedy Wallstreet it’s only getting worse. Typically most manufacturers are going the same way.

I recently purchased a revamped Moccona Vanilla Latte. Previously it was quite acceptable to drink during lockdown. The “new” Vanilla Latte tases like just vanilla – no coffee taste at all.

I know this is about the jar coffee, but I usually drink the latte sachet type and they have changed that too. It’s horrible, hardly any froth and it’s sweet and leaves a gooey layer on the bottom of the cup. Will never buy again, and they are smaller!!!!! I’m investing in a machine and will be buying beans from small independent roasters from now on.

About two years ago I complained to Moccona about the absence of an effective and user-friendly “tear-zone” on the coffee sachets. Unlike a major competitor, Moccona sachets had to be opened longitudinally rather than cross-wise. I was advised to use a pair of scissors to cut the sachet if I wished to create an effective cross-cut opening rather than spill much of the contents when torn longitudinally. I really needed to be receive THAT piece of advice! NOT. I noticed recently that a cross-tear method of opening has been created. They must have had their clever designers working on this for a couple of years. Now, all they have to do is include a vial of chocolate topping just as their competitor does to finish off a great cup of “Joe”. Such a move would be an improvement of some of the the experimental blends that they have shoved onto the supermarket shelves, particularly Coconut flavoured, etc.. I am not holding my breath though. I might even be told to go buy a tin of drinking chocolate and to chuck a spoonful in the mix when I make my morning brew!
