My definition of purge – sell, donate, repurpose or throw away items as you see fit
Herbs and Spices
I’ve been giving my pantry a good food clean out the past few weeks, somehow the food has started to stock up and I have far too many canned goods. What I have also noticed is a collection of spices that has managed to exceed more than my spice rack can handle. I check my spice dates regularly and I am so sure I checked them in the past 6 months, however, I still came across one best before 12/2012. I usually keep spices a little longer than the expiry, seems like a waste to throw it away. I typically smell the bottle and if the fragrance is still strong then the flavour is still there.
McCormicks expiry guide suggests spices can be kept for:
- Ground spices: 3 years
- Whole spices: 4 years
- Herbs: 1-3 years
- Seed: 4 years, except poppy seeds and sesame seeds, which should be used within 2 years
- Extracts: 4 years, except vanilla extract, which has an unlimited shelf life
- Seasoning blends/mixes: 1-2 years
I keep my spices on the wall in the pantry using this wall mounted rack from Howards Storage World
Todays task is to:
Sort through your spices and purge any that have expired and no longer have their fragrance
How many items have you been able to purge today?
