Task 23 – Declutter 52 Things in 52 Weeks Challenge – Crockery and serving dishes

It’s week 23 of my Declutter 52 Things in 52 Weeks Challenge. If you haven’t signed up yet, join me today as I help you remove all those things in your home you no longer need or use.

If your crockery cupboard is anything like mine used to be, it is prone to becoming disorganised. Serving plates and platters are pushed in wherever they fit amongst cups, dishes, and fine china. The bulk of what’s actually in the crockery cupboard rarely sees the light of day, and instead of serving yummy food, these items just serve to clutter up the kitchen.

Luckily we can change all that with a few simple tips. Follow this week’s declutter task below to create a crockery cupboard that’s tidy, organised, and allows you to easily access the items you actually need!

Decluttering Task #23

Crockery and Serving Dishes

This week’s declutter task will show you that by discarding of unused crockery, storing the pieces that are used rarely elsewhere, and better organising the items that are on frequent rotation, you will be able to create a much tidier and user-friendly crockery cupboard.

I did this decluttering task a few years back now, and this was how my crockery and serving dishes looked before I decluttered and created ordered (scroll down below to see what it looked like afterwards). Everything was pushed in wherever it would fit, and finding what I needed in there was a nightmare!

TODAY’S TASK: PURGE AS MANY CROCKERY ITEMS AS YOU CAN

Note: My definition of purge – sell, donate, repurpose or throw away items as you see fit

  • Purge all crockery and serving dishes that you don’t use, or if you rarely use them but want to keep them, put them in another cupboard. Use this cupboard only for items you use frequently.
  • Look at your crockery cupboard and see what storage solutions aren’t working.
  • Remove everything from the crockery cupboard, grouping like items together.
  • Determine what items you haven’t used in over 12 months and consider purging them.
  • Add any new and/or your current storage products in your cupboard to help you keep it organised.
  • Place items you don’t use often towards the back.

This was my cupboard after I did this declutter task. I purged all items I wasn’t using, and stored sentimental pieces elsewhere. By adding a 2 tier shelf at the back I was able to avoid stacking too many platters on top of each other, and it also made it easier to get items out. I added a metal bracket so I could safely store my platters upright, whilst allowing more room for the other items. Lastly the Mesh Drawer on an elfa Easy Glider made the items at the back of the bottom shelf more accessible.
