Take your own socks – bring the kid’s school socks with you. For hygiene reasons you don’t want to be sharing socks with other feet.
Have the shoes professionally fitted – 2 of my kids have different sized feet, so it’s very important to make sure I get their feet measured and shoes fitted properly to ensure they have the right sized shoe for their feet. For this reason, it’s important to check that the shoe fits both feet, not just one!
Buy the correct size – Don’t try to save money by buying shoes that are a bit big, thinking the kids will grow into them. This will cause many problems while the child is walking or running, can cause future problems or even injury.
Want a shoe that will last the school year – Quality and durability are important, look for double stitching.
Comfort – Find a shoe with good cushioning so they will be comfortable sitting on the floor and running around in lunch breaks.

I have 2 boys still at school, I look for shoes that have thick leather on the toe area as the boys play soccer at recess and lunch and they kick the toes out of their school shoes before the shoes wear out.
I have 2 girls and one boy in school, I always had fitted school shoes, so definitely get them fitted, double stitching, comfort and a for the girls a nice slim line. For my boy who kicks the ball around and runs like crazy the shoes have to stand up to wear and tear! One daughter always sits cross-legged on the concrete so good thick leather on the outsides! 🙂

My daughter is hard on her school shoes. I always look for double stitching, comfortable, well fitted shoes. Ascent meet all these criteria and more. We are in the process of having our daughter assessed by an OT and a podiatrist, so its looking like the Ascent Shoes will be the best fit for her!
We have purchased Ascent shoes before and they are awesome, but unfortunately out of our price range.

Last year for Prep I looked for velcro straps, this year for Year 1 I will look for laces for motor skills development. In addition I look for quality and comfort with a professional measure. I have found over the years buying cheap shoes turns out more expensive in the long run. My boys will go through a cheap pair of shoes in 6wks. I have found that buying a good quality shoe will last my boys about 6mths… they are pretty rough on shoes!!

We bought Ascent shoes for the first time last year and are definitely buying them again this year – it was the “sports shoe in disguise” that got us in. At the end of the year the kids said they were still comfortable, and even after playing footy at lunch my sons shoes showed very little wear – or maybe he’s just not as good as he pretends! 😉
I look for a shoe that is comfortable, one that is snug enough so their shoes won’t rub but with enough growing room so I don’t need to buy a new pair in a couple of months. They need to last well and not fall apart and we also look for velcro so our youngest ones can put their shoes on independently. We buy Ascent shoes at Athlete’s Foot too 🙂
My aim is to get the school year out of one pair of shoes. With a boy going into year 2 this year this is a BIG ask as he’s so hard on his shoes! But for the last 2 years we have purchased Ascent shoes and have almost made it. The first year we got until 2 weeks from the end of year before the “gaffa” tape came out and last year it was November.
I don’t believe there is another brand that will give us this longevity.
Quality shoes for my small boys has always been important to me. I look for quality, natural materials where possible, durability, good fit, good tread, supportive & of course, nice looking shoes.
I have 3 active boys at school. I know they run around, play handball, soccer, football and tip during lunch and afternoon breaks. For me the most important thing about buying school shoes, is getting comfy shoes with arch support. My son has slightly flat feet and I need him to have shoes that are going to support his feet while running around and because they wear them for at least 6hrs a day. When it comes to school shoes for my children I look for comfort, durability and support. My son is going into grade 4 and my daughter is going into grade 1 this year they both desperately need new shoes! The Ascent would be perfect for us because our school requires black,leather,lace up shoes and these fit the criteria but are quite pricey. Durability, comfort and quality!
A shoe that can handle the active life of a 6 year old boy… haven’t found one that lasts the distance yet, so I’d love to see how an Acsent shoe would withstand the onslaught!
That they are genuine leather and durability, I have made my mistake over the years and purchased shoes on sale and found out the hard way that I was going back and buying my trusted Clarks a few weeks after school started, so these days I look for Clarks too. I would however give Ascents a go now.
That the fit is excellent, well made and comfy.

I look for a durable shoe that offers their growing feet the essential support they need. They also need to fit in with their school’s dress code.
As my son was born with a club foot, getting the correct fit is essential. A shoe that fits with the school standards and is comfortable is also very important.

I look for comfort and durability. $80-$120 isnt a lot of money to pay for little kids feet for a whole year.
The first year of school for my oldest son, I bought the Clark shoes and sport shoes from Athletes foot for sports day (1 day per week). At the end of the year, the Clarks shoes were 70% worn and the sports shoes were completely worn out from use also as casual wear; both shoes still fitted fine.
The following year when I found out that the kids were running cross country as a class in their lunchbreak, I bought the Ascent disguised sports/school shoes. There is no need to change shoes at lunchtime and risk losing shoes and I know his feet are always supported. There is also no need to figure out what shoes to wear in the morning and where are they, as there is one set of shoes specifically for school.
Lace-ups are required for school and there has been a struggle tying them and tying them tight enough to stay done up. I now buy the Ascent shoes with the elastic fake laces and the one Velcro strap for all my sons. Gives them independence and they are less likely to miss the school bus in the morning.
It’s a no-brainer, the Ascent shoes last and they are able to do what it would take multiple shoes to achieve.

First, check out the school ground and the playing areas, and the activities they’re likely to be doing in their breaks. My children’s school was a building site for the first year my oldest was there – industrial strength shoes are a must for those circumstances. Now the building works are well and truly complete, it’s a mix of asphalt and grass, and they both play and run mainly on the asphalt – shoes need to have solid soles and ankle support.
Also, you have to seriously consider your child’s abilities in the laces department – if they can’t tie laces tightly themselves, don’t go there no matter how hard they beg and plead. There’s nowt worse for a teacher that’s attempting to supervise an entire playground full of kids to have to endlessly re-tie shoelaces instead of stopping Little Jenny from burying Freddy in the sandpit.
I have tried many diffferent brands over the last 3 years with little success of them lasting more than 6 months. I have bought expensive ones and cheap ones with the same results.
Thank goodness I have found this site, my house is in order and thanks to the budget tracker so are my finances. I think I will be heading to Ascent this year and hopefully we will have to get new shoes because his feet has grown and not because of the shoes falling apart.

I look for quality stitching which will not wear out, good tread for non-slip running on the oval, and a style that my very particular boys will actually like.
Comfortable fit (with orthodics), my child’s opinion and ‘The Athlete’s Foot’.
Leather, double stitching, ease of them putting on and off and something they like, if they are a good price too I love that

Correct fitting, durability (I perform the twist of the shoe test as too much movement is not very good. Comfort of my child, I too can vouch for the ascent shoe. I believe it to be very important to have a proper fitting shoe as my daughter wears these 3 days a week running around the playground, we buy the Mary Jane style and they seem to have excellent support and cushioning for her arches.

I look for quality. I like a show that looks like a school shoe with a jogger sole and support. Of course my kids are getting fussier as they get older so it has to be some thing that they will wear. With twins I learnt the hard way to stick with ASCENT. The first year I went through 2 pairs of cheaper school shoes, and three pairs of cheaper white joggers for sports day, each! Yes, 12 pairs of shoes. the next year I bought Ascent and they last all year, every year.
That was meant to be 3 pairs of school shoes and 3 pairs of joggers each!!!!!

I am looking for a shoe which helps to align my 6 year old daughter’s heel to prevent excessive pronation. She gets shin pain if she wears anything other than high quality white joggers but school code is to wear black shoes. Both my partner and I have back problems so I look for a shoe that will support not only my daughter’s feet but her whole body. A shoe that absorbs shock when she walks/runs, is comfortable to wear all day, every day and one that is durable to last at until she grows out of it (which at 5yrs of age, will probably be the end of the year). One that fits her well, so that there is no rubbing, no blisters and no scrunched up toes. One that doesn’t restrict movement and fits the active lifestyle of my little girl.
I look for shoes that fit the foot well – we have brought Ascent shoes for our two eldest children as they seem to fit the shape of their feet well. I also look for a shoe that seems to be well made.
For my two school aged boys, I buy quality comfortable shoes. People often ask why I bother spending $100 on shoes when their kids have been fine in the $7 Big W shoes. My issue isn’t only about whether or not they will last (although with very active boys this needs to be considered) but I am.more concerned about the health of their feet. They are in these shoes almost all day everyday. I want the best shoes to be fitted properly to my child.

Definitely comfort and durability. Ascent definitely are the best all round shoes- the only one that my very active son can wear and they still look decent (without the usual holes in the toes/soles that he normally has with other brands- did I mention how hard he is on his shoes??). And he is so comfortable in them, and swears he runs faster and better in them. So its a win win all around 🙂
My daughter has klippel trenaunay syndrome and one of the issues is that her legs are different lengths.
To prevent (or at least reduce) sprains, she needs a shoe with great support, and this year will have to fit her orthotics. But of course they still have to look good!
Durability!
I would like to have a shoe that lasts long rather than spending money on a shoe that brakes, Id also look for a shoe that is comfortable and also has a lot of space to move your feet around.

A good fitting, supportive and comfortable shoe. They are in them all day and do a wide variety of activities. Ill fitting shoes can lead to other health problems. Nothing worse than a pair of shoes that are uncomfortable.
definitely correct fit. my daughter has long narrow feet, my son flat wide feet with a massive inner roll! my feet are dodgy and so painful all of the time and I would hate for my children to have painful feet, so I’m hoping getting properly supported and fitted shoes will help prevent future pain for them.

versatility and durability – both of my sons like to play sports/handball at lunchtime so I tend to go for a black leather jogger type shoes. My sons both have a skinny heal but are broad across the front of their feet so I have always had to get their shoes professionally fitted usually costing me heaps. Their last clark shoes did not last the distance so I will give athletes foot a chance this year – my girlfriend also went there last year and was very impressed with her kids shoes and the service. Both my girls have problems with their feet, so I always look for support, quality, comfort and style. After spending thousands treating feet problems I don’t want to go cheap and nasty when it comes to shoes.
I look for shoes with good arches as my youngest daughter has flat feet like her father. I don’t want her to have the same problem with her legs and knees that he has. I find it hard to find shoes that look nice but are a good quality and within my budget. Having four daughters it is a costly exercise, and no matter how much I spent on shoes for my twins they would chew through their shoes.
I look for comfort, quality and complying with the shool uniform code. Makes life easier for everyone!!!!
I try to avoid synthetic materials and go for leather material, also the quality of how it is put together like stitching compared to glue etc and try to aim for light weight on their feet. For my 7 y/o son I also have to consider the toe section as he is constantly kicking things that is usually the first to go! For my 10 y/o daughter style is super important to avoid being teased as she seems to make a prime target at school so low key mainstream is the usual winner for her!
I look for good support around the heel, something we can put orthotics in & shoes that will last. A podiatrist recommended my son wear Ascent school shoes 4 years ago, & we have never looked back. They are the only school shoes that last the distance with my son.

My son has special needs and has some manual dexterity issues with tying shoe laces, so I tend to look for brands that have options of velcro tabs to provide him with some sense of independence (checking out your link to the Ascent website, I see they have these!). Of course, on top of that there is the comfort, the look and how much durability and support they are likely to have.
A well fitting shoe that can be used for both the Class Uniform (3 days a week) and the Sports Uniform (2 days a week). I am not keen to buy 2 pairs of school shoes for a Prep child so the Ascent School shoe that looks like a school shoe and functions as sport shoe suits our needs perfectly.

I look for a shoe with a comfortable fit – bit like Goldilocks, not too big, not too small, just right; with a bit of growing room and a good tread. Leather so it molds nicely to their feet shape and breathes out those wafting smells. If my son had his way we would buy the biggest, clompiest sandshoes with thick heels and no laces. My daughter on the other hand would like red sparkly shoes like the Wizard of Oz. I’d love the perfect shoe that miraculously appears polished each Monday morning and expands with their ever growing feet.
I like to buy leather shoes for my children. I look for a shoe with an arch support as I think this is important for posture and to prevent flat feet.
I look for leather shoes as they let the foot breath, that they are a comfortable fit, have arch support, at least a thumb width between the tip of there toes and the tip of the shoe, as the toes should not rub against the tip of the shoe
When looking for school shoes the essentials are: leather, well supporting, quality, comfort, price, durability.
It’s a juggle between what our podiatrist recommends (bendy in the right place, fitting our custom orthotics while supporting heels and ankles well) and school requirements of all-black leather running shoes!
I look for shoes that have good stitching, are a good price for a large family, and ones that my daughters think look like girls shoes – as I got that wrong once, I hope never to repeat!

Definitely that it fits my son and he finds it comfortable. I also find lots of kids shoes are quite heavy so I like to find ones that are as light as possible. My sons school allows velcro for the first 2 years and then laces so a shoe brand with both options so if the velcro ones are comfy I know the laces ones will be too! My sons feet are quite narrow so ones that cater to this as well would be fantastic!

We have now purchased Ascent school shoes for two years now and they are great. They do last the whole year, accommodate one child’s orthotics with no problem, are light to wear and durable. Both children say they are comfortable and never complain about wearing school shoes. Won’t be changing any time soon!
I am about to become a school mum, so don’t really know what to look for in a school shoe. Everyone who I’ve asked advice from has told me to look for leather, sports style shoes and to get them properly fitted.

A good pair of school shoes has
1. Strong ankle support but not too rigid
2. When you twist the toes and heel it does move with some resistance
3. Good weight.. not too heavy and not too light
4. Comfort.. if they are not comfortable you wont want to wear them
5. Good stitching and looks good
I have not had to buy “proper” school shoes before. My kids have so far just worn runners or sandals they already own. This year my eldest boy starts highschool with a very strict uniform. After purchasing the clothes and the Ipad for him I then turned to shoes. AHHHHHHHH! $$$$$ Im not happy about the state of the leather industry at the moment (the use of sacred indian cows is disgusting and our leather industry is not very good either) So im looking for an eco friendly shoe that still fits with the code. I chose school shoes that are not too heavy so my kids run around all lunch break. Many of the huge, clunky leather school shoes are very heavy.
Breathable. My boy has sweaty feet. It’s horrible if his shoes are not breathable particularly after playing sports.

It is good quality and will fit them for at least a year!
Longevity, I have 4 kids and I have learnt from experience that cheap shoes mean that they will only last a few weeks at the most.( I have 3 boys) The more you pay means the longer they will last, generally. I also work in a school, and see some kids wearing “cheap” shoes and sure enough they are wrecked soon enough.

#take the orthotics with me!
# take out the innersole, stand my children’s feet on it to check where their toes spread to make sure that growing toes aren’t being squashed.

A quality shoe in a store with good customer service that can measure and fit the 4 children as quickly as possible! It is never often a pleasurable experience taking all 4 shoe shopping!

For the money outlaid, shoes have to have QUALITY… a substantial sole, heavy-duty stitching and leather that will outlast the child’s time in them!
Only then is fashion considered!
I look for extreme comfort and a great style as school is challenging enough without adding sore feet to the list!

I go for leather shoes as they last longer and stand up to boys kicking footys and lord knows what else and always make sure I get them professionally fitted.

Support and shoes that are versatile as well as reliable
Much like you, I look for comfort and versatility in a school shoe!
I want happy little feet,
To walk along our street,
To school for another year,
That they’ll meet with good cheer!
When buying shoes I look for fit,
But that is only part of it,
I need shoes that run a mile,
And produce a happy smile!
For mums and kids all year long,
Durable leather – can’t go wrong,
Easy to fasten for littlies too,
I just love a good school shoe!
I look for shoes that have good soles that are non-slip, well made, preferably leather so they breathe, they need to fit well and be comfortable.
Durability – my eldest son is in men’s sizes and is costing us a fortune!
At the moment, our school shoes have to have velcro, per obvious
reasons, can’t tie shoe laces just yet and don’t want that phone call
from school saying, he’s fallen, won’t stop crying, hurt his leg, need
to go to doctor. Other features I look for are a comfortable fit,
leather to mould around the feet, support and a lasting quality in the
shoe. I don’t want to have to go purchase another pair a month down the
track.
Comfort, utility, versatility and practicality. I always have my kids school shoes expertly fitted, They wear them so much I don’t want to take chances and get it wrong.
I spend ages looking for the perfect shoe. I seek to find one that meets school uniform specifications, one that is comfortable and is wide enough for my sons’ broad feet, one which provide postures support, shoes which are easy for my children to put on and take off … and, I cross my fingers when it comes to this criteria, are not excessively expensive.

I like shoes to be easy for schoolkids to put on themselves properly – ie, using the buckles rather than forcing their feet into the shoes as is.
Comfort is the most important as I hate seeing them with blisters at the end of the day!

Soles that are sturdy and thick enough to protect the feet from pain and injury, but also flexible so that they will bend with the foot. A bit like how I like the men in my life!

School shoes …. the bane of my existence! My kids need BROWN leather shoes for school and these are one of the few brands that supply them. Love athletes foot for their fitting service.
I look for comfort and good quality leather so I know we will last the year without another trip to the shoe store for replacements!
Well made leather shoes that have half a chance of lasting 6 months. They get worn each day, treated roughly in the playground, walked to & from school, footy gets played in them, bikes ridden and school days lived in them!

Quality, great fit and comfort are essential as school shoes can make of break a child’s day, ill fitting shoes can stop them from participating in sporting activities and joining in skipping or playing tag ..all essential part of the social activities not to mention the long term health problems that can result from poor quality shoes.

Durability, leather so we can polish them to look like new when scuffed. Love ones with removalbe innersoles so can take out and “get more space” for the growing foot inside.
I look for support, comfort and a guarantee – my older son can wear some shoes out in 8 weeks – I sometimes wonder if he chews on them if he gets hungry!

My son has Sever’s Disease which causes him a large amount of lower leg pain so comfortable shoes that have the ability to take lifts and last for as long as possible are like hens teeth. Athletes foot is one of the very few places I can find shoes that tick any of those boxes
I look for wide toes, after once spending 40 minutes getting my daughter to put on her school shoes as they were causing her sock to rub her toes, I’ve learnt my lesson.
Kids’ shoes need to be good quality, perfect fit, smooth inside, perfectly comfortable, lightweight but bouncy too, so impact is low!
Durability! I need it. With 3 teens in the house I go through shoes like water. I have been known to of bought 6 pairs in a week!! They need to last and they need to be ‘cool’ enough for them to wear them. These completely fit the bill!
Velcro. One term of tying laces multiple times a day and we made the move to velcro for the rest of the year.
Suport, they are running around all day playing outside they need to give them the support they need!
Support with a correct instep. Bad fitting shoes cause painful feet
The screwed up bit of packing paper in the toes of the shoes… it makes a big difference to the fit of the shoes (lol).
I look for comfort, they have to wear them almost eight hours so they have to be comfortable.

Kids can be cruel so I like to make sure that the shoe looks good so that my son won’t get picked on for his shoes (and I also ensure all the other boxes are ticked such as comfort, fit, durability etc)!

My son’s chronic immunity problems have made him miss a huge amount of school,
plus his feet fall in badly,
which we discovered is causing leg pains;
he needs something comfortable and light but supportive too,
that will encourage him to go to school,
that’s a lot to ask of a shoe,
but I am sure that Ascent CAN DO!
A good pair of school shoes are well fitting and long lasting, can fit orthodics and are comfortable to play soccer in. Our last pair of Ascent school shoes lasted 2 years, and my son wears them at his part time job too. One more pair will see out his school years 🙂

Quality, quality, quality. Also knowing they’re the best fit for my children’s feet, and they will support the feet, which in turn supports a proper posture, and keep them healthy. They need to be comfortable, and look good too. Hmm, is that a little picky? Only the best will do 🙂

Am the BIGGEST fan of Accent school shoes!! I promote them too at the school as BEING # 1 for being durable, comfortable & economical!! … Girls that don’t complain– that is a GUARANTEED!! 😉
A smile on my childs face. This way i know they are excited and happy to wear the shoes. SO, really no reason to complain about going to school for the whole year! right???? I have always purchased ascent shoes, would not look at purchasing anything else

Fit is my biggest concern. My daughter was born with Talipes and having gone through the many, many casts, boots and bars and leg braces I’m not risking her future mobility on cheaply made, poorly fitting shoes!
Quality which for me means both comfort and durability. I have three boys and ideally I’d like to see a shoe last long enough o hand down at least once! So far we’ve had Clarkes and Airflex shoes, but this year my son (being very sporty) wants black shoes that look and feel like runners, so we’re going to give Ascent a try.
The ‘right fit’ is the most important. Second is quality, preferably a leather shoe that will last. I have medical issues with my feet and realise the importance of good shoes. So when my son was starting Prep last year who has very narrow feet (also slim around the ankles) we spent countless hours with him trying to find the right shoes for school. It wasn’t pleasant for either of us but now we are super happy as we won’t go through it again in a while. I now know which brands to buy that suit and for black formal style lace ups the Ascent shoes are a clear winner! A fabulous buy. It was hard to invest the money at the time, but they lasted the entire year and have withstood a lot of neglect by my active 6 year old, I really I consider the shoes more of an investment than just a shoe purchase. Most places offer a fitting service, however soon you realise that some places are more experts than just sales staff… I cringe thinking about our struggles with fitting last year, but it is so important to get the right fit to avoid issues. Doesn’t matter what the shoes look like, just get the fit right. 🙂
My children need a great pair of shoes as they both wear orthotics and I have found that the ascent shoes cater to our needs. We look for shoes that have good ankle support and are a bit higher around the heel. Leather shoes last much longer and give a lot of comfort as they stretch. My son wears a size 13 and Ascent shoes come in sizes that fit him.
Same as what I look for in a bra- comfort, support, durability and if you’re lucky, something that looks good too ? Got to look after their feet!
With children I go along with recommendations by others that have children as they have learnt before me. I was recommended Ascent school shoes from the podiatrist I took my daughter to. So bought them last year and got the while years wear out of them. Goes to show they are quality made. Am yet to get this years school shoes so am crossing everything here that she again will be in Ascent shoes.
I would look for support for my child’s feet. They will be doing a wide range of movements so will need good support. Then I would look for Velcro fastenings and colour.
What do I look for in a shoe. One that is supportive, durable, comfortable and one that is attractive to wear. If the best shoe is not fashionable well then you have wasted all your money as they will sit in the cupboard until the child has outgrown them. I believe in preventative measures and a shoe that is well fitted etc will save us money in any ensuing medical bills. In the past my children (Miss 12, Miss 9 and Master 9) have worn runners that are either Brooks, Asics. These are professionally fitted The primary school did not have a shoe policy. Even though my children are extremely active I have found that I did not have to replace a shoe before it was outgrown. Now I have to buy black shoes for Miss 12 . Will go to Ascents for a peek-a-boo!
I think that the main factors I look for in a school shoe Is comfort, support and durability. My 7 yr old ruins all her shoes as she is really rough on them (no idea what she does to put them in such a state). I came across this site when goggling the best footwear for school, thank you so much for the advice. 🙂
I have one child, a son, who is 8. This is his fourth year at school and when buying shoes I look for something that is affordable, comfortable, looks great and fits in with school policy. A good fit in the shoe is worth the hunting around to find!
I never compromise when it comes to my child’s feet. I have an athletic 12 year old boy who generally outgrows his shoes well before he can wear them out! (Currently men’s size 12)
