Declutter 52 things in 52 weeks - Task 35

Inside your handbag

Handbags aren’t just a fashion statement, they are essential for carrying around all our ‘stuff’, but they are also one item we forget to keep clean and organised.

Do you store way too many extra ‘things’ in your handbag?  Does your phone ring and you can’t find it because of all the ‘stuff’? I am guilty of this at times, in fact when I met Donna Hay recently I had to put my bag on the ground and rummage through it to find my phone for a photo, how embarrassing.    Do you lose your keys??  I have more paper clutter in my handbag more than anything – shopping lists, receipts, specials brochures, to-do lists.

Have you ever considered how dirty the outside of your handbag is?  While it may look clean more than likely it has germs and bacteria all over it.

Along with decluttering your handbag today, please take some time today to clean your handbag.

I see women place their handbags on public bathroom floors, eew, please use the hooks on the back of the door ladies!  They are also often placed on the floor at your feet while you are seated on a bus, at the movies, in a food court etc.  Your handbag has now picked up all the germs, dirt and bacteria from each of these places.  Further to add to this disturbing information, what do you do with your handbag when you get home? Do you place it on the kitchen bench or dining table?  If so, you are now spreading from your bag to your table, it is an endless cycle.

I store my handbag on a hook in our school bag nook.

 Todays task is to:

decluttering & cleaning your handbag

So I thought today’s challenge be as simple as throw away 5 things cluttering your handbag.  But please don’t stop at 5 though,  if you have 8 or 10 please continue.  What do we really need to keep in our handbag, here what is inside my bag:

  • Notebook
  • Pen
  • Keys
  • Purse
  • Mobile Phone
  • Lipbalm
  • Sunglasses
  • Waterbottle
  • Ladies product (zippered away, for emergencies)
  • Panadol
  • Hairtie
  • Lipstick/gloss
  • A fold up bag for shopping at places like Target and Spotlight that are now bag free

I keep things like nail files, hand moisturising, anti-bacterial gel, hairties, first aid-kit in my car rather than my handbag and use them while sitting at traffic lights.

How many items have you been able to purge today?

I would like to see a photo of your purge pile on Instagram, use the hashtag #declutter52

I don’t have much in my handbag – before children and before I started wearing glasses most of the time, I didn’t even carry a handbag! However, I have decluttered thusly:
– Three old supermarket receipts
– An invitation to a party a couple of months ago
– A couple of used tissues
– $114 (into ma wallet! A much more sensible place to keep it)

And when I get home, there’s a bank statement to go into filing *and* the warranty stuff for my new clothes dryer.

My handbag now contains (as well as the statement and warranty stuff)
Work id card
Business cards (in a holder)
A pen
A car shaped USB (because… why not!)
And a small pencil case with lady’s things, panadol, hand cream, lip balm, refills for my pen and an Allan key which, while I don’t know what it’s for, is obviously in my bag for safe keeping. So it can stay.

I’m with you, PK… I didn’t purge anything. I usually keep my handbag pretty tidy. I did put some of my daughters clothes in there briefly (lucky me, she had a sleepover at Nana’s the night before!!)

I went to a Tupperware party and we were playing a game … where they asked who who has what item on them (eg particular colour clothing item, watch, pen etc) and you got points for each item. I had 15 pens in my handbag that day!!!

I was unable to purge anything from my bag, since the only things in it are things I need to have in there. I don’t shove receipts in there (they stay in the bag with the purchased items), my list is electronic, and I keep so much in my bag that I *have* to keep it tidy.

I use a “bag-in-a-bag” (I have the blue one: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9VCkP2rE-kI/UNbEFsynEUI/AAAAAAAAAy4/UiRQP6FDTss/s1600/Handbag-Organiser.png) which really helps, and I just transfer this from my handbag to a backpack when I need more space.

I’m not going to list everything I carry, as it numbers close to 100 different items (due to medical conditions), but it is really well organised 🙂

Good on you, PK for having a well organised handbag!

Great list Katrina. I also have a small change purse as near where we live we pay for parking?. I like to keep it separate so that my wallet isn’t bulging! I try to keep my contents streamlined so that it’s easy to swap hand bags ?
