Cleaning the filters on your split system air conditioner is one of those tasks that only takes a few minutes, but is often put off. Spend five minutes today to remove the dust and clean the filters from your air conditioner.
If you have a split system air conditioner, how often do you clean the filters? This is one of those tasks that can be easily put off, but is actually important to do regularly. In a recent social poll, 63% of our community said they clean them once a year, 27.5% once a quarter and 9.5% once a month. Regular cleaning of the air filters will improve the machine’s efficiency and lower its electricity usage. It will also improve the quality of the air you breathe when the system is running. Add it to your to do list for the day, you will be surprised at how quick it is to do.
How to Clean Split System Air Conditioner Filters
- Lift up main large cover and remove the filters
- Take the filters outside and knock off or brush away the excess dust
- Rinse the filters under water until the water runs clear and all dust is removed
- If the filters are particularly grimy you can wash them with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse well with clean water
- Pop the filters in the sun to dry
- Put the filters back once dry
How often should I clean the air conditioner filters?
The more you use your air conditioner the more often you should clean the filters. Check the manual for your split system air conditioner, as every manufacturer recommends a different frequency of cleaning, a number of them suggest every two weeks or once a month. If you don’t use your air-conditioner regularly, I would recommend a least once every season at a minimum.
If this is a task that you don’t always get around to doing, write a reminder in your calendar or planner to do it. Or set a repeating reminder on your phone.
Consider getting your air conditioner system professionally serviced and cleaned annually. A service will check the refrigerant gas levels in your system and a professional clean will clean internal components like; coils, fins and drainage.
