Cushions look gorgeous on the bed, the sofa and outdoor lounges, but they do need washing to keep them looking great. Here are my tips on how to wash and clean cushion covers.

Cushions add the perfect touch of coziness to our homes, but if we want them to keep looking fabulous it’s important that they get some TLC. So let me share with you my best tips on how to spruce up those cushion covers!
how to clean cushion covers
kit
- Laundry detergent
- White vinegar
- Vacuum cleaner with small brush attachment
- Bicarb soda
steps
cotton covers
- Remove the inserts.
- Wash the covers in the washing machine on a cold gentle cycle with laundry detergent and 1/2 cup of vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser.
- Line dry inside out.
- Iron on a delicate setting.
Kat’s tip: If your cat or dog loves lying on your cushions and leaves fur or hair behind, use a silicone glove to pick up the hair for a quick clean.
knitted or woollen covers
- Remove the inserts.
- Handwash the covers in cold water with a gentle laundry detergent.
- Dry flat.
- Do not iron.
FUR covers
- Remove the inserts.
- Handwash the covers in cold water with a gentle laundry detergent.
- Line dry in the sunshine.
- Do not iron.
outdoor covers
- Spot clean with warm soapy water.
- Line dry in the sunshine.
- Do not iron.
polyester cushion inserts
- Wash in the washing machine on a cold gentle cycle with laundry detergent and 1/2 cup vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. Wash with towels to help keep the washing machine balanced.
- Shake the insert to evenly distribute the fluffy insides.
- Line dry in the sunshine.
feather or down cushion inserts
- Do not wash, as this can damage the feathers.
- If the insert is smelly, sprinkle it with bicarb soda. Sit for 30 minutes, shake the excess off outside or over the laundry sink.
- Dip a cleaning cloth in warm soapy water and wring out, then wipe over the insert.
- Lay flat in the sun to dry.
