When it’s time to wash your bed blanket, follow these tips to make the task easy and enjoy a fresh, clean bed during winter.
As the cooler months go by, you might like to wash your bed blankets. It can also be a good idea to wash them before putting them away for winter or when they come out of storage.
It’s important to check the washing instructions first, as woollen and cashmere blankets will need specialised care. Choose a gentle cycle that is no hotter than 30°C. Use a mild wool washing detergent. Don’t use the spin function, but dry flat in the shade.
KIT
- Mild laundry detergent
- White vinegar
- Wool dryer balls
STEPS TO WASH A BLANKET
- Wash the blanket by itself in the washing machine on a regular cold cycle with mild laundry detergent. Don’t use too much detergent, as too much will stick to and damage the blanket’s fibres.
- Use ½ cup vinegar and a few drops of your favourite essential oil instead of fabric softener.
- Dry on the clothesline in the sun, as the sunlight acts as a natural way to remove odours and kill bacteria. Drying your blanket may take some time, Alternatively, if care instructions advise your blanket can be tumble dried and it fits in the dryer, dry at a low temperature with wool dryer balls to help the air circulate.
HOW OFTEN
Seasonally – or more regularly if you do not use a top sheet when sleeping.
