You don’t want to use chemicals to clean the inside of your fridge as the food will absorb the smell. Try a natural homemade fridge cleaner. This cleaner will cut through grease, disinfect and leaves a clean natural smell.

Pour the following ingredients into a spray bottle and shake.
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 3-5 drops of lemon essential oil
I use a citrus blend of essential oils in the kitchen. Use with an absorbent cloth, as a scourer will scratch the fridge surfaces. There are many more benefits than just making your home smell nice, read more here. Join my Facebook group The Organised Housewife – Essential Oils.

Love the sound of this natural cleaner! Fridge smells seriously seem to appear when you least expect them…just when you think every container has a lid and nothing whatsoever is leaking, somehow things get that tad bit smelly anyway. I imagine the essential oil in this cleaner would leave things smelling squeaky clean. I’m thinking lemon would be a great one to use here ๐
lemon would be perfect, anything citrus in the fridge, or even vanilla ๐
Too easy. I’m totally going to give this a try!
I love easy things too!!
This is now my job this weekend. Thanks, I think I will use lemon as well.
How long does it last or do you have to tip it out after?
Does the fridge cleaner only ladt gor one use and then chuck or can it be stored for days? weeks?
hi how much vanilla would you need to add to this recipe in lieu of essential oils? and how long will this last in a spray bottle?
many thanks
hello,
how much vanilla can i use in liey of essential oils? and how long does it last or is it only made for one use/ thank you
Is this for one time use or do you think it can it be kept in the spray bottle and reused after mixing ingredients? Thanks
Alison I make mine up and keep it for months! I have never experienced it going yuck or needing to be replaced ๐
this spray is fab, I use it to clean windows and mirrors as well.
So good to hear Naomi! I use mine all the time. Kat x
Thanks for the tips. We work for a cleaning company and had a client which wanted her fridge cleaned. It hadn’t been cleaned in years and she didn’t want any chemicals at all. We used the vinegar, hot water and some mint essential oils. The result was great and she was very happy.
It’s amazing what vinegar can get though isn’t it June?! Thank you for sharing this feedback with us ๐ Kat
I Finish cleaning the outside (stainless steel) of my fridge with a little bit of olive oil on a soft cloth or paper towel. Removes finger prints and leaves it shining.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing Jeanne ๐
Can we use tea tree oil as part of the fridge cleaner? Is that safe and fine? Instead of lemon?
I’m not 100% on this one as haven’t tried it myself. I would suggest testing a small patch before doing the whole fridge. Be sure to let me know how you go ๐ Kat
This looks easy peasy, as well as all the plus points for being environmentally friendly and cheap! I plan to use it elsewhere in my home for cleaning – is there any surface that you would say vinegar/lemon oil musn’t be used on? Is it safe on granite worktops for example?
Thank you x
Hi Helen, it is suggested that vinegar not be used on granite – however I’ve never had a problem on mine. If you are going to try it on a new surface, I would suggest testing a small spot (perhaps under the bench?) before using it all over). Glad you love the fridge cleaner though ๐
Our smell is coming through refrigerator vents or even coil…… Let me know if anyone has dealt with this. Thanks
Dust can build up at the back of the fridge on the vents. Perhaps pull out your fridge from it’s space and clean away any built up dust to see if that helps.
