Here’s the easiest way to wash away chemicals, pesticides, oils, waxes, mould spores and dirt from your fruit and vegetables…and why it’s so important.
The first thing I do after packing groceries away is wash my fruit and vegetables. I find it’s easier to do this in one go, rather than each time someone picks up an apple! It’s part of my routine now and really quick and easy to do.
Even when I buy organic fruit and vegetables from the markets, it’s still important to wash because it can be affected drift spray, dirt and mould spores. A quick rinse is often not enough!
I use an all-natural, plant-based vegetable wash that is super effective at killing bacteria while being gentle to human health.
Here’s the easiest and best way I’ve found to wash fruit and vegetables.
1.
Fill your kitchen sink with cold water, adding half a capful of fruit and vegetable wash.
2.
Wash your produce. Apples, cucumbers, eggplants, capsicums and citrus fruits may have a wax coating to prevent moisture loss – give these items a more thorough scrub with a brush or silicone gloves to remove the wax. For leafy green such as kale and spinach, soak for five minutes.
3.
For smaller fruits like grapes and berries, pop them into a kitchen sink drainer, soak in the wash solution mentioned above, lift from water, empty sink and rinse under clean running water.
4.
Allow the fruit and vegetables to air dry.
5.
Pop smaller fruit such as strawberries and grapes in containers (berry bins are ideal!) and store in the fridge to keep them fresh. You can also pre-chop vegetables and store them in fruit and vegetable containers for handy snacks and meal prep throughout the week.
And that’s it! Now you get to enjoy your fruit and vegetables without any nasties…just as nature intended.
