Cleaning the freezer

Now that you have completed the ‘Use Items from Pantry or Freezer’ Challenge, set some time aside to give it a clean, organise and take note of its contents, so then you can start filling it with Christmas goodies.

If your feeling energetic clean your fridge as well, see post HERE on cleaning the fridge and HERE for details on organising the fridge.

CLEANING THE FREEZER

  1. Throw away anything that is out of date or been in the freezer too long. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find!!
  2. Remove all items from the freezer and place in cooler bags or esky with ice bricks.
  3. Take out all removable parts and wash in warm soapy water in the sink.
  4. While they are drying, wipe the inside of the freezer using warm soapy water and sponge, remembering the door shelves.
  5. Return all shelves to freezer, close door and allow to return to temp.
  6. Return all contents back into the freezer.

TIPS ON ORGANISING THE FREEZER

  • Take peas and corn out of packets and place into freezable containers or glad bags, this will keep the freezer tidy and prevent any stray peas!
  • Keep pastry in specially designed DECOR pastry containers, preventing freezer burn.
  • If you have time make and freeze some cakes, muffins or cookies, great for lunch boxes or unexpected visitors.  I place all baking into the TUPPERWARE Antarctica containers.  I don’t wrap them in glad wrap or freezer bags, just place them directly into the containers.  However other containers may require you to wrap each muffin in glad wrap, depending how airtight the container is.  Our freezer baking is usually eaten within 2 weeks and is as fresh as the day it was frozen (if frozen the day it was baked).
  • I store all my bacon rashers, sausages, peas, corn, nuggets and fish fingers in the TUPPERWARE Antarctica containers
  • Store any left over stock in snap lock bags
  • Freeze bananas for when your ready to make a banana cake
  • Freeze left over wine in ice-cube tray’s, then place in freezable container or snap lock bags

Keep track of what items you have in your freezer use this FREE freezer inventory list

Inside my freezer

Tupperware containers holding baked muffins, cookies and cakes.

Decor Pastry container, ice cube trays and ice pack for all those bumps and bruises

Always have to have  a supply of meat pies, frozen bananas (for baking cakes)

Containers (labelled of course) storing peas, corn, sausages, fish fingers etc

We also have a fridge/freezer in the garage, which stores all bread, pizza bases, and icypoles.

Please share any of your freezer tips!!

Love this post. I love seeing photos of tidy, organised fridges and freezers. Shame I'm away from home at the moment as I'm very inspired to tackle our freezer AGAIN – I just need to get some more tuperware :-).

I have a label maker but the labels don't stick to my Tupperware in the freezer… What's your secret??

I place a piece of sticky tape on my Tupperware and write onto the sticky tape. It is easy to remove before washing the containers too!

With your biscuits/slices do you wrap them in paper/cling wrap/alfoil before going into the tupperware container?

Tammy Flynn Tupperware January 17, 2012 - 4:12 PM

I never put my baking in plastic wrap etc – they just straight into the containers. Never had an issue as they are airtight containers.

What size container are the ones holding the slices/cakes etc? I’ve been looking for that size but can’t find it in the catalogue!

Steph,
These are 3lt Antarctica’s – they only come out occasionally as limited edition, however if you speak with your local Tupperware Demonstrator, they may be able to order from the Spare Parts catalogue ;). They’re $33.10 each. Order sequence numbers are #1998 (base) #2306 (seal) to make it easy for them.

Thanks for this. Unfortunately I only have a 2 drawer under the fridge type freezer! However I do try and put my peas, cauli and broc, etc in tuppawares and my baking. I did a clear out last week and was amazed to find some stuff in there! Also yesterday I was VERY (sadly) happy to discover that Pampas had finally heard my silent prayer and had a box especially for their frozen pastry on sale in my local Woolies yesterday! Usually I only buy what I need for my exact project that day as it always falls out and breaks or gets freezer burn.

Do u stick the labels on the containers at room temp and then freeze? They won’t stick on cold containers. I think it’s to do with condensation.

We have your freezer and although I thought ours was fairly tidy – seeing your photos has given me the inspiration to get ours sorted properly.
Thanks for the great tips!

I love everything about your page. Wow! I would like me freezers to look like your photos. Do you have any ideas for organising a tucker box freezer & 2 freezer drawers in an up-side down fridge? Most of the time I have no idea what is in the tucker box, probably because it’s not easy to reach the bottom.

where do you get your freezer labesls?

Reply
Katrina July 12, 2012 - 8:17 PM

I got them from Tupperware, however they no longer sell them. When I run out I am going to use masking tape and a sharpie pen.

I find our freezer fills up quickly with meet from the nights where we decide to have takeaway (naughty naughty) so once a month I don’t buy any meat with my groceries and we use only what is in the freezer.
