How to Clean Curtains and Blinds

by Katrina - The Organised Housewife November 22, 2010August 11, 2020

Curtains get dirty very easily Whilst they may look clean they collect dirt and dust coming through the windows, oils and dirt hands, and absorb smells from around the home such as pets and cooking aromas, which over times leaves them less than clean and fresh.

How to Clean Curtains

  1. Please check for washing instructions.
  2. Carefully remove from rods.
  3. Remove any hooks.
  4. Handwash – use cold water and mild detergent, wash each drape separately, using the laundry tub or bathtub ;or
  5. Gentle machine wash – use cold or warm water, follow instructions on tag, use mild detergent, don’t overload washer this will cause creases.
  6. Dry – hang on line face the back of the curtain to the sun to prevent sun damage, or tumble dry using a short delicate cycle.
  7. Remove heavy fabrics from washing while slightly damp, this will prevent a lot of creases.  If there are alot of creases you can iron them out, however, they will fall out within a week or so. Iron on the reverse side.
  8. Hang curtains back up.

Maintenance:

  • When drawing curtains daily give them a shake, this will remove some dust.
  • Vacuum curtains and blinds during your regular cleaning routine, using a soft brush attachment

How to Clean blinds

Vacuum using the small brush attachment or use a hand held duster to remove dust.  Don’t use water this will cause swelling and stain.

To clean horizontal blinds use cotton gloves or a sock over your hand to wipe over each slat, or alternatively you can dust and clean blinds with this trendy Mini Blind Duster (which is now available in my shop here).

Hi Katrina,

Great post – I was only thinking this morning I might do a cleaning hit list so I'm already for Christmas and it's not a mad panic in the last week!

While the vacuum is out I also give the flyscreens a good clean with the soft brush attachment as well.

Cheers

Jenn

Curtain Dry Cleaning in Adelaide December 20, 2014 - 5:31 PM

Being Monday I always give the house a good clean after the week-end… I was thinking about the spring cleaning and I agree if we do not get it done soon it will be to HOT…We have a horrible hot wind blowing through at the moment that is blowing dust every-where.

Hi Kat, Do you have any advise on the best way to clean vertical blinds and the cords?

Katrina - The Organised Housewife August 6, 2019 - 9:32 AM

Catherine I don’t have any specific advise on vertical blinds and cords. I use a small brush attachment on my vacuum or a hand held duster to clean my blinds, and if the cords need cleaning I’d simply use a damp cloth to wipe them down. Hope this helps lovely. Kat x

You take the curtains and shades off the windows. Clean the glass with Windex or a mild soapy water solution. Wipe down the window frames and sill.

Yes I definitely need help with cleaning vertical blinds. We live in a humid area and do not have a dehumidifier. The ensuite does not have a fan or a ‘tastic’ either so it’s always dripping with moisture in the cooler months and there is mildew springing up everywhere, I’m in constant battle with it. Now the mildew has come out into the master bedroom on to the long vertical blinds and it’s making me anxious as, esp as we are in a rental. It’s an ongoing nightmare

Farah that doesn’t sound like much fun for you at all 🙁 I would suggest putting something in writing to your real estate so that they know you’re doing everything you can (in the absence of an exhaust fan) to keep the moisture and mildew at bay. Good luck! Kat x

My daughter makes these cookies for us and we all My daughter makes these cookies for us and we all love them so. I LOVE ROCKY ROAD, and these have all those yummy flavours in a cookie! They are a perfect treat in the afternoon when I sit down with a cuppa, I do love the crunch of the nuts and gooeyness of the marshmallow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The cookies freeze really well for eating later, but I must admit we tend to polish off the batch pretty quickly and they very rarely make it to the freezer in our home. I am planning on doing a big baking day soon to stock my freezer with snacks, these cookies would make a lovely once in a while, lunchbox treat if your child attends a school that allows nuts 🥜 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The recipe is on my blog, or just swipe up in my stories! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
