DECLUTTER-CHALLENGE-600w

A few years ago I began the Declutter 52 Things in 52 week Challenge, decluttering one item or area each week.  I am really excited to be running this challenge again during 2014.

Whilst decluttering may be an easy task for some, I know from personal experience (with my mum) that sometimes it’s hard to let go of items.  This challenge is not a quick declutter of your home, we will take baby steps and purge (donate, throw away or repurpose) one item or one area each week, therefore the task of decluttering your home should not be too overwhelming.

How to follow along

A new Decluttering task will be published on the blog each Tuesday.  I will share a link to the task on facebook and in the Tuesday Daily Task newsletter (subscribe to newsletter here).

Follow along on instagram with hashtag #declutter52

Set your goals

The first step to decluttering is creating goals for yourself.  Where to start, what do you want to achieve, this gives you good reason on why you should participate in this challenge.

Answer these questions (my answers are in CAPS). I’d love to see your answers please copy and paste into the comments below, this will help me to determine what tasks I will run throughout the year.  Together I will help you achieve these goals!!

  1. I want to feel RELAXED while I’m at home.
  2. I want to spend more time PLAYING BOARD GAMES WITH THE KIDS.
  3. I want an area of the home where I can TIDILY STORE ALL MY COOKBOOKS.
  4. I want to organise THE OFFICE first.
  5. I always lose COUPONS FROM THE JUNKMAIL.
  6. I want to be organised by 1ST MARCH 2014.
  7. The most disorganised cupboard in my home is MY CROCKERY CUPBOARD.
  8. Something that I don’t need anymore , but am having trouble parting with is EXCESS KITCHEN APPLIANCES.

Why not have a sit down with a hot cup of something and have a little brainstorming session about what “feeling at home” would look like. Create an inspiration board to keep you focused!

Think about the places where you take your hairties out most often – maybe it’s the side of the bed and the bathroom? Keep little dishes there to collect them and contain them.

There is TOO MUCH for me to organise (pretty much my entire house) so I
think the baby steps in the decluttering challenge is the best place to
start for me. I can definitely start with the fridge…

I feel I need to add to my post but didn’t want to lose the message in the list, hope that is ok.

I have a problem, I know I have a problem but I have failed continually to deal with it and make any real progress. I am a hoarder, a packrat, call it what you will, I seem to be incapable of discarding anything, I place sentimental value or “I will need this someday” value on everything.

I have reached crisis point, I actually become stressed as soon as I walk into the house, it is making me miserable and has done for a while now, I have to do something, the problem is so large though it has to be babysteps, I know this as I have crashed and burned so many times trying to do crisis clearing/cleaning. I have started so many times but as can never see progress I give up, feels a little like swimming against the tide, but now, is like the waves are overwhelming me, think the mess is about to engulf us all.

Anyway, enough maudlin ramblings, another person can no more solve this problem for me then the world will stop spinning (don’t worry I haven’t placed all the expectations of a minimalist house at your feet 🙂 ) However this is perhaps the most openly honest I have ever been about my predicament so I am hoping that the lovely support I have seen on your site will be motivating as well as your organised mind and top tips and babysteps in helping me focus and start making those important first steps and more importantly keep going when I get disheartened.

Hi Karen – well done on being able to acknowledge that this is a problem for you, most would say that is the first step.

My #1 view on keeping things because ‘I will need it one day’ – I’ve found that the ‘one day’ never comes until after the thing has been thrown away, so my philosophy is I may as well get rid of it now.

I focus on keeping memories, not things. My husband was a hoarder, but we have moved so many times that this is no longer an option for him (he hates moving, so the less stuff to move the better). If something has sentimental value – such as a present from someone you love (his mum dies 6 years ago today – so anything from her is kept), a travel keepsake, etc – then keep it, but not hidden away in a box. Make a space for it where it can be appreciated.

A young lass I work with was asking me about how many toys be buy for our children (I was wrapping Christmas presents at work) and it got me thinking – my answer for this is I don’t want to give my children ‘stuff’, I want to give them ‘memories’ – I’d rather spend my money on taking them places and giving them knowledge than buying them another thing.

Start small – Rome wasn’t built in a day after all. Whether it be a room, or a corner of a room, or a cupboard. Empty a box and ask yourself why you are keeping it – what does it really mean to you. If you can’t answer, then don’t keep it.

Good luck. If you have a friend you can trust that can help you, enlist her/his help (and tell them to bring wine :))

I too feel stressed and overwhelmed when i come home. I work weekdays and so tired when i come home i barely hit the basics, on the weekend I am so stresed and suffering depression I get little to nothing done. 🙁
seems we are not alone

I very much understand Bev, I work nights and long shifts and enthusiasm for recreating order on a daily basis is somewhat non-existent to be frank. I think I understand now though that it has reached a point that the overwhelming clutter is having a major negative effect on my well being and now is the time for me to do something about it. I hope this challenge helps us both reduce that stress we have from our surroundings.

Katrina January 4, 2014 - 5:47 PM

This decluttering challenge I hope will help with the process being small baby steps, it’s not about perfection it’s about taking the excess out of the home one week at a time. Hopefully we can have you feeling more relax soon Bev x

Karen Booth January 4, 2014 - 9:56 AM

Thank you Carmen, I love what you said about kids presents as I know I have made my own problem so much worse by increasing the kids clutter, they are old enough now that I have started decreasing the amount of “stuff” anyway that is in presents but can still go further with re-evaluating what exactly is needed. One very long overdue job is a major purge of the toys in the house, embarrassingly I can spot baby books and baby toys around the toy room…… my youngest is 9 🙁

Katrina January 4, 2014 - 5:34 PM

Karen, your local hospital, childcare centre or charity may love those old baby books and toys!!

Karen Booth January 4, 2014 - 7:23 PM

Yes, you are right Katrina, we are involved with a charity who can use most of the items so it isn’t even that I haven’t anywhere for them to go, it really is just making that move to get it out of the house.

Lou January 3, 2014 - 8:29 PM

Hi Karen, I feel your pain, I too feel stressed when I walk in my house, I am a SAHM and find myself running out of house not to have to deal with the mess of my not being organised and I too hang on to things mainly my kids stuff, Keep us posted on your progress, You can do it, like you said babysteps, call on family and friends too for support.

1. I want to feel more in control of my space and more importantly my time when I’m not doing a casual teaching day and I’m home which I could easily do if I didn’t procrastinate so much.

2. I want to spend more time developing my photographic skills, scrapbooking and card making.

3. I want an area of the home that is my inspiration/vision board.

4. I want to first organise my household business paperwork (bills, receipts, etc), AND my casual teaching material/lessons so I can easily grab something for a (last minute call for a) day’s teaching.

5. I always lose something when I put it in a “safe place”!!! (My daughters have been joking about it for over 30 years now!)

6. I want to be organised by 1 November 2014 – not too unrealistic but by then I can use your last Christmas tips better.

7. The most disorganised cupboard in my home is casual teaching lessons cupboard, closely followed by paperwork files, and almost a tie for second is the linen cupboard.

8. Something that I don’t need any more, but am having trouble parting with is excess cookbooks as I get most of my recipes online now.

I’m hoping to have a garage sale late February and get rid of some stuff – especially some very large size clothing as over the last 4 years (and I’m just over ½ way) I’ve lost 55 kg; and another garage sale towards the end of October, so decluttering would be helpful.

Oh baby gear… all those little clothes! It’s easiest to do those in stages – go through everything and be ruthless but allow yourself your favourites. Then at a later date, go through again and cull down to a small box of keepsakes.

The cot we have converts into a junior bed which my four year old still uses. Two things that are going to make it easier to ‘declutter’ is that my sister would like it next year (yippee!) so it will have a good home to go to. And my youngest announced yesterday she wants a big bed please. So,,,…it’s time to let it go.

I want my home to function smoothly.
I want to spend less time reorganising things.
I want my kitchen benchtop to remain clear.
I want to train my family to stay neat and organised (I’m dreaming???)

I want to reorganise my pantry first.
I would love to be organised by the end of January so that I don’t have to spend the first week that the kids are back at school doing it all!

Joining the bandwagon a bit late but hoping to either catch-up or finish a few weeks after everyone else. Here’s my goals at least at this point:

1.I want to look at my home as a safe haven. I want to be joyful in approaching each day as an opportunity for growth, adventure, and moving forward without constant fear and anxiety. (My husband passed away a year ago and I have been in a constant state of fear & anxiety for the past 14 months. I have a teenage daughter and am caregiver for my 97 year old Grandma….I have to get it together.)
2.I want to spend more time parenting & loving my daughter; help her deal with her grief, and grow our relationship.

3.I want an area of the home where I can set up craft projects to do with my daughter; sewing, scrapbooking, crocheting, and whatever areas that she is interested in. I want to be able to find what we are looking for when we need it without feeling the need to go out and purchase “another one”, or giving up altogether.

4.I want to organise paperwork, finances and legal stuff first; trust, insurance info, decisions made on what should happen to my child if something happens to me.

5.I always lose everything…literally everything. I have had caregivers in the home to assist with my husband, (and mother), during his illness for the past 7+ years. This has resulted in relinquishing control of so much to someone else. It became a means of survival to deal with what was most important. The result is crammed closets, a 3-car garage loaded to the brim with the left overs from my mother’s passing, 2 aunts passing, my mother-in-love’s passing, and our own junk, started projects, etc. I also have a storage unit that I am paying $200 a month on that needs to be emptied.

6. I want to be organized by summer 2014.
7. The most disorganized space in my (besides the garage), is my office & craft area.
8. Something that I don’t need anymore, but am having trouble parting with is clothing that no longer fits, my daughter’s toys & clothes (she doesn’t want to turn lose of them), and paper, paper, paper, and kitchen gadgets. (For example I must have 6 crockpots, or maybe even 10)

I’m joining late too, but hopefully not too late!

1. I want to feel peaceful and in control of my life and my surroundings while I’m at home.
2. I want to spend more time with the children, doing some crafty things with them, but also find time for cleaning which I never seem to get around to (possibly because there’s so much clutter that it’s overwhelming).
3. I want an area of the home where I can store my paperwork – we had to give up our study when our youngest bub came along, so now our ‘study’ is half of the dining table. Not optimal.
4. I want to organise the dining table or kitchen first.
5. I always lose fuel vouchers from the bottom of dockets.
6. I want to be organised by … as soon as humanly possible! My husband and I both work pretty much full time so I’m not sure what’s a realistic goal.
7. The most disorganised cupboard in my home is my pantry (actually, there are two little cupboards for my ‘pantry’ and I’ve also taken over some of the hall cupboard for some pantry items).
8. Something that I don’t need anymore , but am having trouble parting with is clothes that I wore when I was younger and thinner, or clothes that I’ve bought thinking I’ll fit into them one day. I don’t know why they’re still hanging around.
Hope you can help with any or all of this – and hats off to you if you manage to! I’m looking forward to coming along for the ride.
