5 Self Care Ideas for Everyday

It’s important for us to look after ourselves so we don’t burn out. Here are 5 self care ideas for everyday to do just that!

Life can become overwhelming whether you have kids or not, whether you work or not. The little things can build up and before you know it, everything around you can feel like chaos. Having a self-care routine can help reduce anxiety and overwhelm. I am the type of person who has a million things going on and my mind never stops! When I had three kids under 3 including twins, sometimes life became overwhelming.  I have made sure, over time, that I create a simple self care routine which I can implement into my everyday life. 

1. Mind over matter

Sometimes we keep everything to ourselves and internalise our stress and anxiety. It helps to spend each day talking to someone positive who makes you feel good, even if you don’t have time to see someone in person, a quick phone call to a loved one can make all the difference in your day. It’s nice to feel supported and know that you aren’t the only one feeling a certain way. 

2. Set small goals

Setting small attainable goals means you don’t overwhelm yourself with something too big. Do you want to de-clutter your wardrobe or have you been meaning to eat healthier? Start small… maybe start with one drawer a day or maybe start with eating a healthier snack in the morning. Slowly build up to what it is you want to achieve. Breaking down our ever-growing to-do lists into smaller more manageable parts helps to make life a little less overwhelming and seeing the results can be uplifting. Use my daily planner to set achievable goals and soon enough, you can look back and see how far you have come.

3. Move

Exercise can be the last thing on your mind when you’re busy, but it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. I know some people have the ‘go hard or go home’ mentality with exercise but honestly a quick stretch and walk around the block can do wonders for you. 30 minutes of exercise has so many physical health benefits and keeps you mentally healthy too!

4. Breathe

I know what you’re thinking – we all breathe every moment of the day! My question to you is do you breathe correctly? Breathing through the nose, filling your lungs and your belly and breathing out slowly is a good start. Full deep breathing helps you feel more calm and relaxed and feel clearer. It’s like a form of meditation without having to do the whole ‘meditation’ thing – unless you have time to meditate, then that’s great! 

5. Look after you

We’re told our whole lives that we can’t look after others unless we look after ourselves first. Whilst I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly, as a mum it can be easier said than done. Children are vulnerable and their needs often demand attention, and in tending to their needs we can easily overlook or forget our own. Setting aside time for your own happiness and health is crucial. You may have to organise a bit of time to yourself everyday or the very least wake up a bit earlier than the family and spend that time doing nothing or something you love.
