Looking for a special homemade gift this Christmas? A Cookie Mix in a Jar is such a thoughtful way to spread a little holiday cheer! It’s a delightful DIY gift that lets your friends, family, kids’ teachers, neighbours, or workmates enjoy baking a fresh batch of Christmas cookies (or biscuits!). Simple, creative, and heartfelt, this homemade gift idea is sure to bring a smile and some festive warmth to those you care about.
With the contents of the jar and a few extra ingredients, the recipient can make these really yummy chocolate chip oat cookies.
A few years ago I gave my neighbour a Christmas Cookies Mix in a jar as a Christmas gift. She was so thrilled to receive it because she was having visitors later that week and this would be so helpful to have the mix ready to make a batch of cookies as having a new bub she didn’t find time to bake as much as she used to.
Christmas Cookie Mix in a Jar is so easy to put together and makes such a wonderful gift to give instead of a box of chocolates.
What Jar to Use?
You can use whatever large jars you have on hand, but keep in mind it needs to be large, at least 1 Litre. I keep my 400g jar of moccona coffee through the year specifically for Christmas Cookies in a Jar mixes. Jar ideas:
- Recycled 400g Moccona Coffee Jar
- Jar with wooden lid, available here
In the picture below you can see I also used a 950ml Mason Jar. The full contents didn’t fit in, I reduced the sugar quantity slightly and added half the amount of coconut. But, I have since found the above jars with wooden lids on Amazon, which I think would be the perfect size.
Place the ingredients in jar in the following order
Remember to wash the jar before adding the contents to remove any dust and dirt. Clean the jar either in the dishwasher or use hot wash in hot soapy water and rinse well.
Use a piece of paper (sticky taped) to create a funnel so it’s easier to pour ingredients into the bottom levels, this will help to create a nice layered look.
As you pour each ingredient into the jar, give it a gentle shake to even out the layer. I also pushed the brown sugar down.
Add ingredients in the following order:
- 1 1/3 cup Self Raising Flour
- 1 cup traditional rolled oats
- 1 cup Christmas m&m’s
- 3/4 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup castor sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut
I topped my coffee jar with a few more M&M’s as it wasn’t quite full. Filling it up will also keep the layers looking nice and prevent it from moving during transportation (however there is no guarantee it won’t move).
Decorate the jar
Place jar on lid, decorate with ribbon. I purchased this fun Christmas Polka Dot ribbon online here. Then place a Christmas Cookie label on the front and back. These labels are an instant download, available in my shop. You can print them within minutes after purchase!
The label on the back will give instruction on how to bake the cookies.
