SimpleHuman 25L Deluxe Rectangular Step Bin

I never thought I would be so excited over finding a bin.  When we built our home, 8 years ago, I didn’t consider placement of a bin in our kitchen.  But once we moved in I soon realised I had nowhere to put one as cupboards surrounded our kitchen area, we didn’t have any wall space for it to sit against.  At one stage i did buy a nice tall round one and placed it in front of my oven.  It was always in the way and when I had to throw it out because it became rusty I didn’t bother replacing it.  Instead I used a small bin under the sink that fit the shopping bags as liners, it would fill so quickly, it was hard to get to when the dishes were being done, it really wasn’t the most convenient place.  There were times I would often find a shopping bag on the corner of a cupboard door which often resulted in something spilling onto the door.  However, we just persisted.

But, I then saw this SimpleHuman 25L Deluxe Rectangular Step Bin at Howards Storage World recently, it is a rectangular step peddle bin. Most stainless steel bins I have seen in departments stores have been round.  I much prefer a step pedal bin so we don’t have to touch the bin which is handy when you have your hands full of potato peels.  I took home the measurements to see if it would fit in the walkway into the kitchen, between the bench and the fridge.  Hoping there was enough room when the fridge door was open and it did, I was one VERY happy housewife.

I am loving this bin, it is making cleaning the kitchen at night a breeze.  Here is my game plan after dinner:

I have everything open, the dishwasher, the pantry and the bin.  I am able to scrape the food off the plates straight into the bin and then drop into the dishwasher.  I keep the pantry open so I can easily place items away that I used to cook dinner. Usually the kitchen is clean and the dishes are washed within 10 minutes.  Remember I don’t dry dishes, I let them sit overnight and put them away in the morning, only takes a few minutes.

Very stylish

Lock system allows it to stay open as long as needed

 Other bin options available:

Simple Human Pull Out Recycler.  Create a dedicated cupboard when building your next kitchen for recycling and rubbish, using this pull out recycler system.

Hettich White Cupboard Bin, if you have the space under your sink this would be a great space saver.

Swing Bin, this would fit perfectly in tight spaces.

It’s funny how important a bin is! We just renovated our kitchen (from poor original 1950′s condition) and top of my list was a “waste management system”, similar to what you’ve shown below your post. It has 3 bins and fits snugly underneath the sink. It pulls out like a drawer when needed. My 3 year old son already sorts our waste for us and rarely makes a mistake between compost, recycling and rubbish.
