Prior to starting this blog I was contemplating returning back to work being that all my kids are at school. Before kids I was a secretary for a property development company, typing dictated letters, answering phones, collating 100+ page contracts and more. I worked 8.30am – 5pm 5 days a week, I left soon after I fell pregnant with the twins.
I always wanted to be a secretary, I remember when I was young watching Perry Mason with my mum and mesmerised by the lady typing away (taking shorthand notes) during the court sessions. I learnt to type on a typewriter when I was young and when I left high school I had a very high typing speed. I then went to TAFE and graduated with a Diploma of Office Administration. This course was perfect for me, one of the subjects that I remember quite clearly was how to organise a filing cabinet. ORGANISE!! Yes I was a very Organised Secretary! And another subject I enjoyed was designing a newsletter… who knew 15 years on I would be writing my own newsletters and running a website, all which I designed myself.
Much of what I learnt during my course has helped me with my blog writing, design etc. However, after 9 and a half years out of the work force I feel that I need an update to improve my skills. I would really like to take a course in website development, understanding code and full website functionality.
I speak to many mum’s contemplating studying so they can return back to work, I hear a lot of:
- I don’t want to do what I did before kids, I need a career change
- But I forget how to do it
- I don’t know where to start and what to do
- We can’t afford to live anymore, I need to work
- I have kids, how do I study, be mum and look after the home
- I can’t afford to pay for a course
- I don’t know if I have the time
- What are my options?
