Everyone brings an unnamed, wrapped present under an agreed $amount to add to a pile, then names are drawn and each person gets to pick a gift to unwrap from the pile. The twist - the second person can choose to swap their gift with the first person, the third person can choose to swap their gift with the first or second person and so forth. This is a game where the loved ones will go to great bargaining lengths to keep or get the present they want and hilarity ensues. Add a bonus round or two of Christmas trivia at the end for further gift swaps and fairness.

For a few years now, I have been baking my gifts for family members - I do a different bunch of recipes each year, dress them up differently (sometimes in a decorated bag, sometimes in a decorative bowl). While it takes a bit of time and effort, it's much easier on the budget, everyone loves that you have made it yourself, and the fact that they are tasty doesn't hurt either!

hi Katrina, we do the Present Swap in my family too. It's supposed to be a "Secret Santa" but never ends up being a secret! Another thing we do is along with our name on the slip of paper, we also add 2-3 gift suggestions within the allocated budget, just in case the "santa" hasn't a clue what to buy ;)

I've also done the totally handmade Christmas one year and it was lots of fun. Some people complain that certain family members (particularly the younger/teenage ones) won't appreciate the handmade gift, but I think it's just a matter of thinking through the gift idea appropriately. If you cater to their tastes (instead of your own influences) they will love and treasure it.
