Below are some tips on how to avoid getting to that tipping point with your filing.

Clear the backlog

Step 1 – sort through the pile of paperwork including magazines and newspapers, and group into two piles; trash or file. You might like to bring a rubbish bin into the office so you can get rid of trash immediately.

Step 2 – now that you have a neat pile of paperwork to file, devise a filing system that works for you. If you work with others, consider whether they would look for the information in the same place as you. Your system may include files for tasks to complete, invoices to pay, interesting articles, client files, or outgoing mail.

Step 3 – file that pile away into your filing cabinet/folders. You might even find that on second glance, you really don’t need to keep some of the paperwork. I love kikki-K filing products, but you can find some great filing options at IKEA, Target, Kmart, or Big W as well.

File daily

Now that you have your backlog cleared, you can take some simple steps to ensure it never needs hours of attention again. The first step is to file daily. Take 30 seconds to file the paperwork now, and avoid having to spend an hour of your family time on the weekend sorting out 1-2 weeks of paperwork. The second step is to adopt the FAST approach:

File it

Action it

Send it

Trash it

This system doesn’t just work for your paperwork, you can apply the FAST rules to your inbox and digital filing as well. This means all your information is stored in a simple, easy to use, totally tailored filing system just for you.

This is a guest post by Norlin, from the blog Baubles, Bubbles & Bags Style File

We almost always forget ourselves when it comes to organising our lives. When I say ourselves, I mean, looking after ourselves in the beauty and grooming department. All too often we leave things to the last minute, and therefore causing some slight chaos, not just in the looks department but also limiting our own time and resources to make us feel and look good. When I say looking good, I don’t mean looking like a supermodel, but more presentable to us and the world we face each day. While it might seem shallow to some, it is true though how little things that we do can make us feel good. While most of us have busy lives, I’m going to share with you a few easy-to-follow tips to keep you all organised for the year in the beauty department.

More often than not, it’s basic grooming that we do which will keep us looking good and well looked after. Simple things like our eyebrows, skincare regimes, nails and hair can actually minimise daily fuss if we keep to these simple tips.

Eyebrows – The eyes are the windows to your soul and in actual fact, having your eyebrows shaped and groomed can minimise your daily beauty routine. A nicely shaped pair of eyebrows helps frame the face and reduces the need for you to apply any make-up. Not sure how to shape your own eyebrows? Then it’s best to go to a salon and have it done professionally. Once that is done, you would only need to do weekly “clean-ups” yourself. You would however have to have them re-done every 4 weeks – just to make sure your eyebrows stay the right shape. Tinting your eyebrows can also help save some time in getting ready, but I normally steer clear of this unless I have a great beautician you can do this really well.

Hair – Want to keep your hair looking good all the time? A simple tip that we have to follow yet not many of us do (yes me included) is to have your hair trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks. This minimises breakage, split ends and keeps you looking fresh every time. For you to actually do this regularly, I would advise you to book in your appointments in advance. That way you can have them locked in at the hairdressers as well as in your diary!

Facials – Having regular facials can help you minimise having to fork out heaps of cash later. Regularly
exfoliating (at least twice a week) ensures that your skin stays clear of any impurities and ready to absorb any creams you apply in your daily routine. You can do weekly facials at home – a simple cleans, exfoliate and mask – to save some money, but you would need to go to a salon for major facials like getting rid of blackheads, whiteheads and other impurities every 4 to 6 weeks. While salon facials might seem extravagant, but I think this saves money in the long run from having you fix any major blemishes later on. Again, book in advance so that you can have it in your diary.

Nails – If you like having your nails painted, then go for it, but more often than not, we simply haven’t got the time or in some cases money, to spend getting our nails done. For you to keep your nails nicely groomed all the time, my advice is to have them at a length that you can handle. Square shaped nails are easy to upkeep in my opinion. Cuticles that are neat and tidy give your nails that gorgeous, groomed look too. You can groom your nails at home by following these easy steps:

File your nails – in one direction and when they are dry. I recommend using a glass nail file rather than an emery board.

Soak your nails in some warm water. You can choose to add some Epsom salt to soften your cuticles.

Apply some cuticle oil on your cuticles to soften them further. Then with an orange stick simply push back your cuticles. I would avoid cutting them as this would cause the cuticles to grow thicker next time plus you might accidentally cut your skin instead.

If you’re looking to paint your nails, then buff them to keep the nails smooth for easy application. If not, then I would say you’re ready to go!

Last tip – if you want to minimise your nail grooming time, then paint your nails in clear or nude colours. This will make your re-growth less obvious when you haven’t got the time to re-paint your nails.

I hope these easy tips will help keep your beauty regime better organised and looking spiffy all the time. Remember, YOU matter too!

This is a guest post by Alyce, from the blog Blossom Heart.

Greetings! My name is Alyce, and I over-think. Am I alone in this? Probably not, but maybe I am… I am a girl after all; us girls do like to over-think things. But maybe people will think I’m crazy, maybe it’ll sound like I’m talking to myself…

Sound familiar?

Being a stay-at-home mum, I can sometimes go days without much adult contact, other than my husband. Meaning that the only adult conversation I have is with myself. No, you won’t find me talking to myself aloud, although I do mutter at my children in the trolley as I wrestle it around the supermarket, but if you peek into my head you will often find me:

Rehearsing conversations in my head;

Writing mental to-do lists over and over;

Worrying about potentially forgetting to get things done (like write this guest post until a couple of days before I needed to send it in);

Analysing my behaviour – how is it being perceived by my husband, my children, my friends?

Guilt-tripping over what I should be doing or should have done or should do but know I won’t…

Yep, it’s not a pretty sight sometimes. And one of the worst times for over thinking is when I lie down in bed at night and close my eyes. My husband falls asleep within minutes, whereas my brain frequently decides that in order to wind down it needs to re-process the day’s thoughts. But I have found that if I write these thoughts down, I can get my brain organised.

One of the best things I did for getting my brain practically organised was get a diary with a week per opening, with 3 rows for each day. It’s actually supposed to be used for different family members, but I’ve divided mine into Morning, Afternoon and Night.

Throughout the day, I’ll jot down the things I need to do as they come to mind, so that I can tell my brain to switch off and go to sleep instead of worrying about it and re-reminding myself.

Getting my brain emotionally organised isn’t quite as simple. I used to journal (the grown-up name for writing in a diary!), but that dropped away once I was married, and is now non-existent with kids. Now, blogging has been my outlet. I don’t get overly personal, but the friends I have made and the community I have become a part of are invaluable. I may not get to have coffee dates with them, but they live in my smartphone and I take them everywhere I go! Mummy bloggers share similar frustrations, similar struggles, similar joys. We get each other.

For a similar outlet with fellow mummies, try finding a new mums’ group – local councils and churches often have playgroups on a weekly basis. I still meet roughly once a month with my Child and Youth Health mums’ group at a playground and I have a weekly mums’ group at my church that I can count on being a highlight in a low week!

Being a stay-at-home mum can be isolating. Get out there, give it a go. You can do it!

This is a guest post by Susan, from the blog Frost Bite.

As women or homemakers we are juggling all day, every day and quite often we put ourselves last in the list of things to do. So I was thrilled to hear that The Organised Housewife is focusing on YOU this month.

So what has the freezer got to do with YOU?? Well, let’s think about the times in the day when we are most harried, when we run around non-stop and never take a breather. I’m sure I could tell you that the freezer can come to your rescue at those times.

Morning Chaos

Do your mornings fill you with dread? Do you force yourself out of bed and move in a daze because it’s so darn early? Do you hate making school/work lunches day in and day out? I have two options for you to make the mornings just a little bit easier.

Why not make some lunchbox items and store them in the freezer so that they can be whipped out in the morning, add a piece of fruit or some carrot sticks, and the lunches are DONE! Here are plenty of ideas to get you started:

Try out the fantastic variety of freezer recipes on The Organised Housewife

Here are tons of ideas on which sandwiches are suitable to freeze

And lots of non-sandwich ideas for sweet and savoury foods for the lunchbox

So that’s lunch sorted, but what about breakfast? If you’re sick of your standard breaky you might like to freeze some muffins, pancakes, waffles, banana bread, croissants, sweet or savoury loaves, and all can be quickly defrosted for breakfast. Or if you have a long commute to work, why not grab one of these items from the freezer to eat en route to work?

Using the freezer in the morning may buy you 15 minutes more sleep time, or a long, luxurious shower. Stop and cherish those little luxuries, you will start the day in a better frame of mind.

Arsenic Hour or Witching Hour

Many parents know the horror of 5-6pm when the children are hungry, parents are exhausted and there are many mouths to feed.

The freezer can be your saviour at dinner time however most of us stick to the same old bolognaise or casseroles when it comes to freezer food. Our generation needs to be re-educated as there is a HUGE variety of foods that can freeze, we just don’t realise it. Did you know the following types of food can be frozen?

casseroles and stews

curries

soups (including creamy soup – just give it a good stir when you defrost)

pasta sauces

pasta bakes or lasagne (you can freeze them cooked or uncooked)

sang choy bow filling

taco filling

nachos filling

homemade pizzas

savoury tarts

quiche

fried rice or pilaf

meatballs and meatloaf (you can freeze them cooked or uncooked)

hamburger patties (cooked or uncooked)

meat or chicken pies (or if you’re short on freezer space you can freeze the pie filling and assemble the pie at the last minute)

you can marinate meat and freeze it, then simply bbq it when it’s dinner time

you can prepare skewers of meat and freeze them for the bbq or grill

Cooking should be enjoyable, not a chore. Why not change your routine and cook when it suits YOU, when you’re not rushed. I like to cook on the weekend or when the children are asleep. I’ll put on some music and cook at a leisurely pace (often with a glass of wine to make it even more enjoyable!). Then I’ll pack all the food into ziplock bags or plastic containers and freeze it for when it’s needed.

Other times I’ll cook dinner on the day it’s going to be eaten, but I’ll make a double/triple batch and freeze the leftovers for another day. Either way, I now have a spare freezer that’s brimming with a huge variety of foods. So when we come home late from Guides or netball practice I simply reheat dinner and stay sane. Bliss!

Other times

The mornings and evenings are the most obvious times when the freezer can work for YOU but there are plenty of other occasions:

Birthday parties: I like to prepare and freeze the foods for my daughters’ parties so there is no stress on the day. Happy mum, happy party.

Entertaining: I love to entertain but our Saturdays are crazy-busy so I normally make and freeze one or two courses in advance of a dinner party. That way I can swan around like a domestic goddess during the dinner and there is less washing up too (yay!).

Holidays: If we are going to a holiday house I’ll take a few gourmet frozen dinners with us so that I don’t need to think about meals and we can enjoy some amazing food while away. Mums rarely have a proper holiday, I say it’s the same crap just in a different location. If you can eliminate some of the food preparation while on holiday then you may actually have a break. Imagine that!

So the moral to my story is: make friends with that big white appliance that is in every kitchen, make it work for YOU, find time for yourself and EAT WELL.

This is a guest post by Caz Makepeace, from the blog yTravel Blog.

There’s the pull that comes with being a mother.

From one direction to the next, the demands never stop.

The dishes continue to pile up in the sink as you race around in a frantic 15 minute pick-up-everything-from-the floor-and-shove-it-somewhere dash.

You’ve only got 15 minutes because you eldest is begging you to play Barbie schools and you promised a quick five minute game before you start peeling the potatoes for dinner.

Somewhere in between the baby wakes and needs changing and while wiping away poop you quickly steal a minute to process the day you just had at work.

The pull didn’t stop there either: Meetings to attend, paper work to file, customers to please, or if you are a teacher like me, children calling you all sorts of names and swinging from the rafters, making sure that you don’t get a chance to teach anyone anything.

Your husband’s not even home yet; and you’re so exhausted you couldn’t really care. How am I ever going to utter a “Hello,” let alone, “How was your day honey? Let me get your coat”?

Its times like these that make you want to climb to the top of the nearest tower and shout “Stop the world, I want to get off.”

Except we can’t really do that, can we?

Stop the world?

Stop Your World

There are certain things however that we can stop.

Life never used to be this hectic, remember?

Sure, there are now children, and husbands, and jobs and responsibilities, but underneath all that still lies the you that has always been you.

It’s just been buried there for a while by the roles, the labels, and the responsibilities.

When you feel like stopping the world that is your cue to take a much needed break.

At some point, you need to put away the chores, the mothering, the planning and the life organizing and just allow yourself to be.

Organize You

You’re focused this month on Organising You. Looking after your mind and body in order for you to have a healthy life; it is a priority and is not something for you to feel guilty about, like we mother’s love to do.

You cannot have a healthy mind if you don’t take time to stop and breathe. If you don’t, you might find yourself recovering from two unexpected surgeries in a hospital bed over Christmas, like I just did.

Sure enough, life will stop you somewhere.

Create a Holiday Change

A friend of mine once told me, “Caroline, a change is as good as a holiday.”

No truer words have been spoken and throughout my life I have taken them to also mean the best avenue for change is a holiday.

Place the word holiday, or travel, in your mind right now. What images and phrases does it conjure up for you?

I bet already you are starting to relax as you think of those carefree days of adventure and discovery, romantic beach walks, sunset swings in hammocks with a good book and a glass of wine.

So much time to relax and just be who you want to be; no directional pulls just a gentle swinging to the rhythm you create.

It feels so good, doesn’t it? It’s because this is how you are supposed to feel. This is what life is really about.

Make a Travel Date

Use this month of Organizing You to plan time for yourself for that getaway or holiday experience you crave.

Pencil in the words “travel date” into your calendar now. Make it a priority.

It could be something as simple as

Girl’s getaway

Weekend camping trip

Week long beachside retreat

Rock climbing course

Family two week holiday

Overnight spa experience that I have always desired

Romantic hot air balloon with the love of my life who I have not googly eyed for far too long

Or, my personal favourite, “My day to do what I want, when I want, where I want… because I can.”

Travel doesn’t have to a monumental task that involves expensive flight tickets, visas, passports, and dragging the kids to far flung destinations… or it could be, if you want.

Travel is about leaving behind the things that suffocate you for a while. It’s about experiencing life unencumbered without any responsibilities. Even if it is just for a day, it will nourish and rejuvenate your soul.

Instead of being pulled by life, you can now embrace what you love about it: optimal health, peace, celebration, creating strong memories with your family, spending quality time with your lover, connecting to the spiritual world, and rediscovering what is most important to you.

When will you give yourself a chance to leave everything behind? Write it in your diary now — in ink — and begin the planning and anticipation. Don’t break this date with yourself.

This is a guest post by Julie, from the blog Beautiful You by Julie.

image credit: ‘Be Yourself Be Beautiful Ebook’ from Beautiful You by Julie.

Sometimes, (ok lots of times!), as women, wives, mothers, entrepreneurs, employees and all the other hats we wear – we put everything and everyone ahead of ourselves. We come last. To put ourselves ahead of anyone else is seen to be uncaring or even selfish. That we need to be martyr like as women to in fact, be, a good woman.

It all sounds very much like the right and good thing to do until it stops working for us and sometimes stops working for us in the most dramatic of fashions. We become overwhelmed, frantic and feeling like we can never do enough. Or we begin to shut down, unable to cope and just…stop.

I want to tell you that no matter how busy you think you may be or how many demands there are on your time that you can find ways to put yourself first and still be there for others you care about. It begins by knowing this…if you don’t put yourself first and treat yourself well, a torrent of resentment will build inside you for never truly having your needs met and you will teach others around you that it is ok for you to be last and not as deserving as others. Think about that for a moment if you are raising a daughter – or in fact a son – and the message that sends them.

The Organised Housewife is a truly amazing website that I know through here and Katrina’s many fans on Facebook provides you all with incredible tips to get organised and make your life just that little bit easier and more joyful. To reap the rewards of being organised though, my challenge to you is that you need to every so often (or please MORE than every so often!) allow time in your life to stop, breathe, relax and enjoy your surroundings and what you are creating for you and your family. To take some time out for you so you can recharge and continue with a sense of strength, self- love and renewal.

How can you do this?

Well…I don’t wish to give you any more things to organise but putting you first, especially if you aren’t used to do doing it does take some practice and yes, some organisation. A great deal of it is about ensuring you make a promise to yourself that you will find time in your day (even just five minutes!) or your week (even just an hour!) to set aside some time for yourself to do something you love and is rewarding to you. That’s the best thing I could think of for you that requires a little bit of organising. Here are a few ideas to get you started but YOU will be the best judge of what works for YOU.

5-15 Minutes in Your Day

Learn a guided meditation (there are lots of great apps for this you can download free straight to your phone) you can do quietly to help refresh and reset your thinking – or simply take a small break.

File and shape your nails and rub in some nice hand cream.

Even if you’re just at home by yourself, put on your favourite pair of dangly earrings and a slick of lippy to give yourself a boost.

Make your favourite cup of tea and sit down with a book or magazine. Go the whole hog and put your feet up while you’re at it!

Ring a friend for a chat and giggle.

One Hour a Week

Go for a walk by yourself or with someone you love to chat with. Movement and communication = the curer of many emotional ills.

Take a class. Yoga, scrapbooking, dancing, tai chi, photography. What excites you to try?

Take a long soaking bath and show your body some tender loving care. Glass of wine optional!

Have lunch, brunch, coffee and a catch up with a girlfriend.

Sleep. Sleep in or go to bed early. Sounds like such a simple thing but getting in some extra zzzz’s can be so beneficial to your overall health.

There are so many more things I could suggest to you but maybe you can share some of your ideas in a comment for The Organised Housewife community to benefit from! What do you do for you that allows you to regain your sense of self and be able to laugh, connect and truly enjoy all your efforts in being organised? Because if you don’t get time to enjoy it and see how it positively benefits your life – what truly is the point? The point to being organised is so that you can live a happier life that allows you time to fit in all the things you want to do that creates a meaningful and wonderful life. And yes, that truly does mean taking some organised time out to both celebrate and take care of YOU.

One thing I have seen over my time as a mother is that women and mothers tend to place themselves last on the list when it comes to kindness. It is just what we do. There are so many demands for our time and attention that we devote our time to helping others instead of helping ourselves. This is a lovely, natural trait that as women we generally have. It is of value and important. But, what we tend to forget is that we need some kindness in our lives as well.

Being organised in our homes, allows us to have more free time to be kinder to ourselves. So often as women we try to do it all, be it all and have it all. We work so hard at getting everything just right in our lives that we push ourselves so hard that we end up falling in a heap. Being organised is very different from having everything perfect. In my home someone will always be messy, someone will always be grumpy and someone will always mess up the state of my house. There is never a moment when there is total order, my home is constantly changing and is there to be lived in. With seven children the closest we might get is when they are all asleep. Even then it would be pushing it!

When we let go of our own high expectations and the unrealistic expectations of others, we can find more time to do things for ourselves and increase our own personal happiness. Life with lower expectations can actually be more fun and so much more freeing. We can then start to live each day with less pressure upon ourselves and start to plan in activities that we actually want to do for ourselves.

Here are some of my tips for being a little kinder to yourself:
1. Give yourself permission to take some time out for yourself
2. Talk to your family to get their support
3. Plan a regular time out spot each week
4. Start small with regular, short time out moments
5. Do not compare yourself to others
6. Listen to your heart and trust your instincts
7. Write a list of activities you enjoy doing
8. Ask your friends what they enjoy doing
9. Dump the guilt and rest or sleep if you need to
10. Keep making yourself a priority and have fun!

To help you focus more on being kinder to yourself I have written an ebook, Pockets of Happiness where I share some of my secrets I use to feel a little happier during my day. I know that it can be hard to find time for yourself when you are super busy chasing after the kids, keeping up with housework and running a household. Planning time for you then becomes a challenge and in my ebook I have pages for you to fill in and ideas to help get your started on finding your own happiness.
