Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping: Country Style

This is a guest post by Jo, from Country Life Experiment Eighteen months ago we picked up our family and moved from Sydney, back to the family farm where my husband grew up. Since our move, our whole approach to eating and shopping has changed. Today I want to share with you how I manage […]

Jo – I just loved reading this! The variety of fresh fruit and vegetables you have year round sounds amazing. One day I would love to live this way, even if not on a farm. Right now I’m in an apartment in Bangalore and it’s a struggle just to think up meals for a couple of days let alone a month. You have sent me off into a lovely daydream….ReplyCancel

    Jo
Awesome post!! And I so relate, we have been shopping once a month for 10 years now. Great tips, and pretty much our experience.
Couple more tips for you, not sure if your Country Boy is handy at woodwork, but after having the smallest pantry ever when we first moved to our property my husband built a new pantry to the ceiling, same floor space but much much bigger.

Something else I’ve only implemented in the last couple of years too, a master pantry list, it mirrors my master shopping list but is taped to the inside of the pantry and contains the numbers I should always maintain of items. Saves me each month standing there thinking, “now how much tomato sauce do we need each month” I hate making the same old decisions.
With a family of 11 we sure get lots of stares with 2-3 trolleys which is why I far prefer to shop at 7am or 8pm, but saves lots of time and money as you say.ReplyCancel

  • Hi Kat,

You may not remember me, but I have met you at a few Problogger conferences. I was actually embarrassed to talk to you because I could write a blog called “The Disorganized Housewife”. However, you might like to check out my healthy living blog – lost 35kg and kept it off – under the recipe tabs – meals the entire family should enjoy!

    Best, Liz N (www.lastchancetraining.com.au)ReplyCancel

    • Hi Liz!! Wow that is extraordinary, congratulations on such a great loss. Are you coming to the next ProBlogger conference, I will be talking there!! I’m off to have a look for a few recipes and follow your blog!!ReplyCancel

      • Hey Kat, just realized that they’re all under “nutrition”, not recipes (told you I was organisationally challenged!). I sure am coming to the next PB conference as it’s in Qld and I’m from Brisbane. I really think that meal planning is half the battle – I know how much easier things were from a weight loss perspective when I was organised and knew ahead of time what was for dinner – so in my humble opinion, you’re on an excellent path!ReplyCancel

    • Liz I can’t find your recipes tab, can you share a link??ReplyCancel

My son was born 7 months ago and I have had the realisation that Ineed to loose the baby weight to fit into my work clothes! I’ve been using an app called MyFitnessPal (I’m in no way affiliated!) and its great to help track food and exercise. It has Aussie foods in its database and links in with a whole host of other fitness apps. I’ve lost 4kg so far :)

Good luck with your efforts – you CAN do it!ReplyCancel

    Hi Kat,

Well done on starting your journey. At only 23 I am doing something similar. I come to your site for recipe inspiration sometimes. My favourite healthy meals are zucchini slice, fritters, stirfries, chicken & home made sweet potato fries. I love quinoa but it makes me sick in the stomache :-( ReplyCancel

  • SNAP! I’m doing chicken, leek & blue cheese pie tonight ;) I think the cooler weather just gets me in a pie making mood. Love the mexican layered dip too, yum!ReplyCancel

  • Suzanne

During cooler weather, VERY early in the morning or after the sun has gone down is when I make meals the require oven cooking. I have become handy with the slow cooker and even hubby, who HATED it, has become a convert. It uses less energy (money), less effort and it’s so lovely to have a meal ready at the end of day surrounded by a clean kitchen.

It’s only 26*c at the moment so I did Greek theme: Greek salad, Spanikopita, Dolmathes with Avgelemono Sauce. Salad is a jiff to make. Spanikopita were made ahead then baked out of the freezer. Dolmathes were made ahead already cooked so just needed warming in the micro. Avgelemono Sauce was fresh. From start to finish (freezer to finish for some items) in about 1 hour. Left overs? Sorry, none :)
