{BACK TO SCHOOL} Getting ready, organising labels + giveaway

This post is sponsored by Nuffnang

Now that the rush of Christmas is over its time to start preparing for the kids return back to school.  Even though they don’t start for another few weeks, you will need all this time to cover books, name bookpack items, label everything, prepare the uniforms and so much more, especially if you have more than one child attending school.  Over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you all my tips and ideas for back to school organisation!

The one task that needs to be completed before anything else is ordering labels.  I say this so you can take the delivery time into account as this usually takes 5-7  days. Labelling ‘everything’ is essential so it’s easier for your child to identify their own items, will stop others from taking what isn’t theirs and if it gets lost having it labelled with their name will help it be returned.

When ordering labels take into account everything that you need to label:

  • School uniforms
  • Hats
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • School bag
  • Lunchbox
  • Drink Bottle
  • Ice Pack
  • Bikes, helmets and scooters
  • Exercise/text books
  • Pens and pencils
  • Book supplies such as glue, rulers etc

With all the above in mind you may need a variety of labels and in this case a school labels value kit maybe your best option.  Look for a pack that will include of what I think are 4 essential labels:

pencil labels for colouring and lead pencils

clothing labels for uniforms

I like to remove the tags from my kids uniforms as they scratch and irritate their skin.  These labels are made from vinyl, so they are smooth and non irritating.  Treated paper is supplied with the pack so you can easily iron labels onto clothing.

large labels for lunch boxes

smaller labels for drink bottles

Bright Star Kids have a variety of label packs, something to suit everybody

For the purpose of this post I got the labels printed with our surname as I don’t publish my kids first names.  This has saved me from buying  a pack for each child. However, I do recommend if you have more than one child it’s a good idea to order their clothing labels with their first and surname, purely for your benefit so you know who’s uniform belongs to who. I have 2 kids in the same size, easily to confuse who’s uniform belongs to who.

My eldest is starting pre-prep this year so we need to start labelling everything. From my teaching experience I have found the things that are hardest to identify for little kids are undies, socks and hair ties/scrunchies etc…always the things that are left with no owners…so they are definitely some of the most important/strangest things to label!

  • Kylie Flavel

EVERYTHING when my son went to Sydney on his own last year for the Australian Gymnastics championships. He was only 9 and in the first day, he lost his phone, room key, event pass AND silver medal!!!

  • Amy P

Ok so not really strange, but difficult to label – I had to label a fluffy pillow for rest time for my Son in kindy. I used an iron on label on a ribbon then looped the ribbon, opened a small part of the cushion up, stuffed the end of the ribbon in and sewed it shut!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jodie.tawn Jodie Tawn

Underwear is the thing I found strangest to label, but definitely a necessity when they’re toilet training!

  • Marg P

Underwear, not so they don’t get lost but so my teenage daughters don’t freak out if I give them the wrong ones….

  • Rach

I labelled my children with wristbands last year when we took them to the Brisbane Ekka.

  • Sheridon

My husband! When he went out with his mates I used to write on his arm: If found please call wife ###### (ph number).

  • http://www.lifeatnumber35.blogspot.com Michelle

My two girls play representative sport so for every trip everything has to be labelled – socks, undies, strapping tape, toiletries!!

  • Tammy

I once tied a luggage tag with my contact details to my daughter’s ponytail. She was about 18months, we were in an airport and I was 7 months pregnant… It is one of my favourite photos of her still!

I also labelled mum’s tupperware tumblers in permanent marker with party guests names… the names are still visible a million washes and about 20 years later. OOPS! I guess they don’t make permanent markers like that anymore – I have to constantly relabel things I label in “permanent” marker.

    • Meg

Metho works really well to get even ancient texta off tupperware :)

  • Mandy

Probably homemade meat pies. My kids love it when I cut their initials out of pastry and put it on their pie so no one else gets it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alison.wheway Alison Wheway

My Daughters!! We went to the Zoo and Miss 5 started to take off with a friend and I was held back with Miss 3 and a friend and stroller, so I wrote my mobile number in pen up her forearm! Fortunately, she stayed close by!

  • http://www.facebook.com/juliechambersbranham Julie Chambers Branham

Everything! I have two kids (a boy and a girl) who are very close in age. They fight over everything so I have to put their names on all of their stuff!!!

  • Kara

Knickers! As I was getting my eldest ready for kindy last year, I remember ironing on the labels thinking why??? But yes it seems everything going to school needs a label even knickers :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/emma.watts.9822 Emma Watts

My daughter wanted to label her guinea pig when we took it to school for a class visit! I had to convince her to compromise by labelling the pet carrier. I don’t think Woffles would have been happy with a sticker on her hairy little body :)

  • Emily

I need to label my son’s swim gear, including swim fins and a kick board… I wonder if there is one small enough for googles?!

  • Jazzy

I am definitely a label girl …. I am a casual primary school teacher and I am always lending kids pencils, pens, glue, rubbers etc from my bag just so there are no excuses as why they cannot finish their work…. They always come back now since labelled “MRS SUMMERS” lol

  • SuzieLove

My son wanted me to label his actual tissues! Made me laugh though.

  • chloe

Strangest thing would be my husbands lunch. Someone in his office use to like my cooking so much, that they are it every day for a week lol.

Thanks for such a great site. Love you to bites xx

  • Cath Roberts

Embarassingly…our CD/DVD collection…it is housed in purpose built pop-out storage and arranged alphabetically by artist/movie title. Sadly my very organised husbands idea – even though I am the one to do the labelling!!!

  • Megsy

Flannelette Nappies! My second child (C-Man) was a huge fan of “ruggies” when he was a toddler and we found that he was happy with one of the many flanny nappies we had – he did demand they all have his name on them so at Child Care they all knew they were his. Very cute indeed :-)

  • Anne

As funny as it seems, my identical twins girls often need to be labelled in some way. We usually do this with hair styles, ribbon or earrings. This year they are turning 8 and will be with a different teacher for the first time.

  • Danielle mckenzie

I’ve had to label each item in my childs lunch box. And his jocks i thought that was odd how is he going to loose them

  • Lisa P.

  • Julie C

A bone sample that my husband wanted to keep. From 2002. It’s in Keen’s mustard jar with water and labelled.

Kids Mac Donald’s toys. They were fighting over who’s was what….. Can’t argue with a name in black Nikko :) )

  • Jennifer

I labeled the entire plastic drawer of my babies diaper station with weird phrases and poems.

  • Amanda A

I’m embarrassed to say I once labelled a labelmaker with “Labelmaker”. In my defence I had just bought it and was desperate to try it out but couldn’t think of anything else to label. I’ve left it on there all these years later for a giggle :)

    • TheMindfulMum

OMG that is hysterical, I bet you win :)

      • TheMindfulMum

I actually labelled my little girl’s teddy today so her sister wouldn’t play with it.

My son’s blanky (which was a face washer) which he took everywhere!

  • http://www.facebook.com/iamstephyc Stephanie Cotterill

Haha, some funny responses! Strangest thing I’ve labelled is banana’s. When my boys wanted to make sure that they each got their own. Just used a sharpie on the peel. Definately saved any arguments!

  • Jodie H

lol when we has baby number 4 i put each outfit into a big zip lock back and labled the size and sex hahah and i even had 4 for the first outfit! 2 for boy and 2 for a girl and 000 and 0000 as we had no idea how big she was (everyone said she was going to be huge)

i wanted to make sure if hubby had to dress her/him at the time he would know what was what, and then all 000 and 0000 were seperate and it made it easier…

have been know to write my mobile # on the boys arms in permament marker when we go to big events hehehe

  • Kim M

Labelling tupperware makes me feel like my mother – especially as it is for my husband! Strange because I never thought I would do it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sharron.lawton2 Sharron Lawton

After a long day of getting the boys things ready for the start of the school year I accidently labelled the back outside of my sons school shirt, at first he was so surprised that everyone knew his name on the first day of high school but not so impressed when he realised why. To this day he still has a go at me about it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sharee.ussher Sharee Ussher

I label anything & everything possible, my 4yr old & husband lose most things… like father, like son ;)

All of my children have the nude food movers lunchbox sets so i labelled the lids of their snack containers as well as the container as they seem to be really popular since the school has gone ‘wrapper free’.

  • Kirsty

My kids asked me to label our cats feeding bowls with their names so the cats will know “who’s is who” :)

  • Joni

Anything that belongs to my husband so that it can make its way home!

  • lainskii

hmmm, pantry items? Don’t really label much so haven’t done anything strange yet, I’m sure I will as the kids grow up.

  • Alyra Shaw

LOL – what fantastic responses. Clearly I need to do a lot more labeling besides the pantry containers and kids drink bottles!

  • http://www.facebook.com/danielle.clydesdale Danielle Clydesdale

My own lunchbox for the staffroom. But lids .. Always seem to be labelling lids, why do they never return!

  • Laura

  • Bev

Socks my step son use to take mine and the would never come back so i started labeling them and then for some strange reason i ended have way to many socks lol

  • vetstar

I havent had to label yet but I have 2 little girls within 11 months of each other and a little boy on the way within 18 months of the youngest so I do think that labelling is going to become a very big part of my life in the future just to keep the peace if anything :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/melindadp Melinda Di Palma

At a recent show we made my son a wrist band out of paper and sticky tape with our number on it. Apart from that, I generally label his clothes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rebecca.zacharias.3 Rebecca Stamp

My kids both got a buzz lightyear for christmas and I had to label one of them to stop the kids fighting over which buzz lightyear belonged to who!

  • Kim m

My lunch, people at work take it otherwise…

  • 1nitahaircut

I label everything- that way there is little to no arguments in my house of 6! The strangest thing I have had to label were elastic hair ties and shoelaces! Into the nitty gritty! I have labelled apples and bananas too!

  • Ying Ying TAN

Having only one child, never thought labelling my daughter’s room is necessary. Apparently it is because she always end up in my room on my bed!

  • http://www.facebook.com/melinda.drennan Melinda Drennan

I don’t know what the strangest thing I’ve to label is….The kids toys and games all have a letter on them, every time they get anything that is the same it gets their initial so NO arguments…..other than that I only label stuff for school, and cutlery, plates and cups for camp outs…

  • http://www.facebook.com/saralie.chuckles Saralie Chuckles

My husband thinks I am a nut, I label everything even my labels are labelled.

my daughters knife, fork and spoon on her first girl guide camp.

    My pack of labels!

  • Rachel K

Pencils because they are easily replaced and are cheap to purchase – so why do I label them every year? I guess it’s just habit but it really is stupid when you think about it!

  • Shannon R

{hangs head in shame} but some days I probably need to label my kids withy their names! As a working parent seeing customers all day and calling them by name, I can often get home and mix up the kids names. Seriously not sure how I can, we only have 2 kids (1 boy 1 girl)……

  • Merryl Chantrell

I would like a large label I could affix to my husband’s forehead especially when we go to the Hardware Store and he wanders off mumbling ‘I’ll meet you back here’ and his voice trails off :-)

The remaining three quarters of a Kit Kat in my top drawer at work :-P

    Kids underwear

I am constantly reminded of my need to label at my old work. You would open the freezer to find clip lock bags with two slices of bread labelled bread!

  • http://twitter.com/KazEdwards23 Karen Edwards

The only weird thing I’ve labelled is underwear :-)

  • Linda Maynard

The weirdest thing I’ve ever labelled??? Definitely my daughters undies for school. I was using iron on labels and my husband walked in and said “Have you gone insane? Why are you ironing her undies?” I explained that it was a directive from the school. He looked quite puzzled and said “How is she going to lose her undies at school? What are they doing… nudie runs?” I had to remind him that they actually have to take them off when they change for swimming. :)

  • Niamh

At work Myself and a colleague label our milk in the communal fridge with “Goats Milk containing quick acting laxative. Use at your own risk” Needless to say our milk doesn’t disappear as fast as others!!!

    • Lisa

Thank you for giving me a giggle – I’m going to try this one @ my work!!

  • WMO2

The strangest thing I have had to label is my little boy’s nappies when he was going to day care. Even though his things were suppose to be kept in his bag, when he first started going he would always come home with someone elses nappy (I know this because of the brand we buy and the brand he use to come home in)

  • Chris

A bag of wool in clear packaging that said “wool” .

  • AlisonF

Shoes, at child care there was 3 children with the same shoes as my daughter and as they would take them off at rest time, staff would often get them confused.

  • Jessie Hay

When my kids go to school I label everything- down to their sharpeners, scissors and textas. I have ever been known to label their drink bottle lids! When I can’t get a label onto it I burn their names on with a soldering iron lol. It takes a long time when you have 5 or more kids at school!

  • http://www.facebook.com/kelly.glock Kelly N Shawn Glock

I often feel the need to label my children! I have 4 girls all close in age and I have a bad memory!lol. I often call them by someone else’s name.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=705712640 Kathy McMahon

I too on a couple of occasions labeled my dd. When she was very young, and if we were going out in large crowds, I would write my mobile phone number and name on both of her arms with permanent marker. We never needed it, but I thought it was a great idea if she got lost.

  • Donnelle

The strangest thing i’ve had to label was my childs banana when he was
attending preschool as EVERYTHING in lunchboxes had to be labeled. This
included juice boxes, sandwich bags etc. Needless to say I didn’t use a
stick on label, just a texta, but still, it seemed pretty stupid.

  • Jennifer

I’m probably strange – I label everything. Helps me keep things tidy and helps “missing” things find their way home from school. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/tanya.glancy2 Tanya Glancy

When I worked in Child Care in the Toddler’s room I would label every child’s nappy with their name on it before they went home. If they were back the next day I would know who didn’t get a bath or changed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lynelle.fozard Lynelle Fozard

The kids fruit for crunch and sip as they always seemed to have their bananas and mandarins go missing….

  • Mel S

My sons football that he takes to school and i make sure i label it more than once in case the first label falls off lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/kim.french.794 Kim French

Single pieces of fruit, apple, banana, orange.

  • Cassandra

my son is about to start pre school and i have labled his underwear

  • Casey

A tennis ball and a dinosaur… DS loves taking toys to share with friends at school. Branding everything with his name is the only way to ensure there arent any schoolyard disputes over who’s dinosaur is who’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mandynico Amanda Nicholson

My kids shoes and USB sticks for school. Very hard to find a label small enough for the stick !!

  • megan

i have never bought labels before but after my son lost his $40 school Jacket and $25 school hat last year (named with permanant marker and only worn 3 times) i swore i will label everything!!! at least then it has a slight chance of returning to us. the weirdest thing that i have had to “label in permanant marker” were my boys toy cars (from the movie)…mind you they both had exactly the same ones due to my thinking it wouldn’t cause fights (but apparently these things can be distinguished from each others belongings..never the less they all have little symbols on them) and clear plastic boxes with what was inside them…facepalm moment!

  • Alex S

As a kid I used to label the little packets of chips that come in the huge variety bags. I did this as my older brother would always come and steal the best flavours. So one day I decided to evenly divide the packets and label. I think this is where my obsession for labelling items came from!

  • http://www.facebook.com/jodie.evans.98 Jodie Evans

Hubby, as he was going out drinking heavily with the boys, in a strange town, I wanted them to get back to the hotel where we were staying. Mostly a selfish reason as I didn’t want to be driving around in the early hours of the morning looking for the drunks when they had no idea where they were. It worked, they made it back to the hotel thanks to the name of the hotel on hubby’s arm.

  • Kristy

I want to label my combs and brushes! They seem to disappear into my daughters bathroom and bedroom and it’s irritating!

  • Andreajvb

As a child i remember i labled allof my clothes drawers!

  • Tamar

I had to label my expressed milk so no one used it in their coffee at work LOL

  • Emma B

I have labelled my USB stick…

  • AMG

I have no idea how you are meant to label socks????

  • Gabby H

I have labelled my light switches, I have a set of four with half inside lights & half out, weird but so useful :)

  • Megs

My kids don’t seem to know who they are, they answer for each other or don’t answer at all … think I’ll label them so they know who they are!!

  • Domestic Diva

I labeled my kid’s underwear before a sleepover.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mary.preston.12 Mary Preston

We labeled the dog, just until we bought the new collar.

  • Hailey

I have labelled my daughters headbands, yes it may sound really silly but i wont allow her to wear hair accessories to school that aren’t school colours. They go walk about throughout the year and are not cheap, and the cost adds up. If i could name the hair ties i would lol it drives me batty!

  • http://www.facebook.com/clareanthony81 Clare Anthony

I have had to label my daughters banana (on the banana peel) at kindy, so the other kids don’t eat hers.

  • http://www.bunchoberries.blogspot.com Jessica Berry

I really don’t label much. I have a label maker that I use for scrapping. I have used it for labeling the years on my scrapbooks. But labels would be great for teaching supplies. I am a special education teacher that works in the general education classroom with the gen-ed teachers. Every year they buy supplies and write their names on them, this would be great to gift to a few of them. :)

  • Melissa Furmedge

I have labelled my children. If lost please call…. One day i went out with my twin boys then aged 4 and their cousin 3 with the cousin and one of my boys being “runners”. I stuck on the labels and had forgotten about them. The look of horror on my sisters face when i dropped her home and she saw i had labelled her daughter is priceless!

  • Gillian Larcombe

My sewing scissors are labelled to differentiate them from household scissors…actually, they are labelled with a threat to anyone who touches them!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Liz.Hollier78 Liz Hollier

  • Mel Raff

The inside dash of my car!! It was a new label machine and I wrote “I love my wife” and stuck it to the dash (to the bewilderment of my husband!!!) and then when we had our first child i added “and child” then when we had the next child I added “ren!” so in the end it read, “i love my wife and children”

I’ve labelled my daughters headbands for school with a permanent marker (on the side that touches their heads). I used to label my pens at work with the old “sticky tape and a strip of paper” method. And I had to label lunchboxes almost everyday last year with the permanent marker as it kept wearing off in the dishwasher… so much for permanent!

  • http://www.facebook.com/lesleyanne.clegg Lesley-Anne Clegg

  • Liz B

I labelled ‘the good scissors’ as my fabulously sharp (and expensive) dressmaking scissors were constantly being used for paper and other no-nos. Then of course I had to label all the other scissors in the house as ‘the evil scissors’.

  • Teresa M

I labelled the dustpan ‘inside’ to stop hubby using them for muck in the garage

  • http://www.facebook.com/jodie.daniel Jodie Daniel

I labelled my kids undies last year… when he went swimming I was paranoid that he would end up with some other kids undies.
I also put labels on my linen cupboard shelves… sheets, pillowcases, towels, hand towels, facewashers. After cleaning it all up one day…. I wanted to ensure it stayed that way. (it kind of did)

  • Aileen

There is a fair bit of labelling of cables and plugs round this house so someone (me) doesn’t pull out the wrong plug and create an IT nightmare or mess up the DVD recorder when I’m being domestic and vacuuming etc.

My Groceries at one place I worked if you ducked out and grabbed a few groceries and popped them in the fridge you had to label them or they would be thrown out – we had a co worker who was anal over the fridge! • Irena

    Socks!

  • Meg

At my girls school a lot of the kids have the same school logoed school bag. As a result the kids use a lot of keyrings etc to tell them apart. Each of my girls keyrings has their initals on the feet as some kids have had theirs go missing. I can’t fit even their full name on the foot so its normally just 1 letter LOL. Its worked though, none have gone missing in 2 years!
